    Pro-bono Designers for Small Projects

Friends Without A Border, United States

    Well-being

Friends Without A Border is seeking volunteer designers who can work on small projects such as x-mas cards and event invites. If you are interested in helping please respond to this post.

Friends Without A Border (Friends) was founded in 1995 by internationally acclaimed photographer Kenro Izu who has dedicated himself and his photography to Cambodia's children. By using his photography to raise awareness and financial support, Izu's dream was realized in 1999 with the opening of Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC). Over the past 7 years AHC has treated over 408,000 children and the range of services it provides has grown. The AHC Medical Training Program has flourished and AHC is now an officially recognized Teaching Hospital. The Capacity Building and Health Education Program continues to grow and has begun to make a significant impact on the medical infrastructure of Cambodia. Friends remains a small organization with great ambitions, maintaining small offices in N.Y., Tokyo and Paris. Friends employs only four staff members and maintains a modest budget. Funds are raised through grants, donations, annual events and the generosity of our donors.

ABOUT WALKONCEMORE: Imagine losing the ability to move and feel for the rest of your natural life. That is the reality for millions of individuals worldwide who have become victims of a paralyzing spinal cord injury. Walkoncemore funds cutting edge research into a cure for this horrific condition. This cure is within reach and with your help we can weld the key to unlock paralysis.

PREFACE: It is now widely recognized in the medical community that victims can recover from paralyzed spinal cord injury pending advances in medical science. Therefore, patients across the world are largely investing in FES bikes to keep paralyzed limbs active and to stop muscle atrophy - such as the model shown at www.rehamove.de. The trouble that many patients have is the issue of what to wear when using the bike in order to be able to easily place the electrode pads and protruding wires that connect to the bike on the muscle groups of the legs.

NEED: Design trendy/fashionable work-out pants and everyday pants for this new generation of Spinal cord injury victims with easy access to place the electrodes (for example, side velcroed-poppered etc.). These pants could also really aid a person with limited mobility in their day-to-day dressing too. Various length options would be needed because when a person sits in their wheelchair they find their pre-injury usual inseam requirements are not long enough and the pants ride up to their ankles. Perhaps cut-to-fit styles could get around this (i.e. a 38” inseam, and the person cuts to desired length.

GUIDELINES: Pant styles must be skin-friendly (i.e. no buckles, buttons, etc.) on the seated area to avoid pressure sores. In addition, easy-access waist closures and a discreet opening flap for catheterization should be included, considering many spinal cord injured people need to catheterize about every four hours. Because the majority of victims are young adults, keep in mind that appearance is important.
