This utopian pursuit is infantile, at best; a horrifying waste of human energy, at worst. The ecology of corporate capitalism is one in which scarcity and poverty are necessary conditions. You may as well attempt to design the world flat as design an end to poverty in today's ecology that we all constantly create. Come back to the real world, kids. Let's get busy meeting the challenges of maintaining great, resiliant communities at home. The 20th century is over, but the United States hasn't moved out of it yet. The coming infrastructure disaster will keep plenty of us busy for years to come.
