• NFP-Part 1

    Well-being

So far, I have multiple NFPs and organizations that I want to work with. Because my topic needs such a large variety of research expertise I have made contact with these following NFPs/Organiations: P2D2 Program, Health Care Without Harm: The Nurses Work Group and Medical Waste Work Group, Morristown Memorial Hospital, NYC Wastele$$, and Solar one Estuary and Native Plants Program. As of right now I am waiting to hear back from Solar one and NYC Wastele$$. I have had correspondance with NYC Wastele$$ but basically nothing further than general information inquiries answered. It is a program run by the New York City Bureau of Waste Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling and it strives to educate New Yorkers how to dispose of certain wastes such as medical products properly. Solar one seems like a great way to speak with specialists regarding the testing of NY water supply. I would like to ask them questions about testing for hormones and antibiotics and to have them take me on an educational tour. I have had multiple correspondance with the P2D2 program in Pontiac Illinois. This program run by a local highschool teaches people how to dispose of pharmaceuticals properly. Speaking with the founder has been an information gold mine. Studying his proposed take back program really sheds light on the size of the problem my thesis deals with. I also had the chance to visit Morristown Memorial Hospital in NJ to meet with the Hospital Environmental Director. The waste manager, took me through the entire waste disposal process in the hospital which also shed light on take back programs and waste distribution centers. I was able to meet the local manager of SharpSmart which handles the collection, distribution and disposal of the waste. My last NFP which is my biggest focus is Health Care Without Harm. Although they are located in Arlington, VA, I was able to be referred to their Chair representatives in NYC from The Nurses Work Group and The Medical Waste Work Group. Both of these are really promising contacts because not only are they anti-incinerator, but they fill my research gaps revolving around visiting home nurses, pharmaceutical disposal, and other medical waste disposals. I plan to acquire more knowledge of expertise from each one of these NFPs and have my charrette take place with HCWH. I would really like to conduct a charette with the highschool in Pontiac, Illinois. I think it could be an amazing experience to see what young minds think about this subject.
