    Survey I sent my survey out to 35 people. 17 people responded in full to each of the six questions. All of the questions were multiple choice. They focused on persons response to natural disasters and they way in which they perceive the effectiveness of aid response, specifically monetary donations. The majority of the people responded moderate to high in regards to emotional impact, however, the majority of people simply watch the news closely and take no further action. Moreover, most respondents chose $1,000,000+ donation as the level needed to have any effect on natural disaster victims. The conclusion from my survey data would be that people are indeed emotionally invested in the events of a natural disaster but they see themselves as being helpless since they cannot donate a substantial "effective" amount of money.

    * 100 people reported affected
    * Declaration of a state of emergency
    * Call for international assistance

    The boxing day earthquake/tsunami is the third most deadly earthquake in recorded history (~230,210 dead and missing) according to the USGS

    NFP Contact Emails have been exchanged with American Red Cross Greater New York State Headquarters on 49th street, working to setup interviews and meetings.

    Also beginning communications with he Disaster Relief Communications Foundation (DRCF). Although they are located in Texas they are pursuing something incredibly relevant to my thesis, their missions statement is, "An Non Profit NGO researching affordable telecommunications for small non-governmental organisations engaged in disaster relief and humanitarian aid during the acute phase of an emergency."

    anthony, so, I haven't really kept up that much with your project, and I'm glad to be seeing this post. I am quite behind in my reading, so I may find other posts that discuss it, but can you remind me or tell me what product idea you are exploring? It sounds from your survey that you learned something about the perception that individuals cannot really do much in terms of contributing to disaster relief. I think that one reason that people throw up their hands about this is that think that large NGO's like the the American Red Cross are very inefficient in the way that they dispense money collected from donations, and so they figure "why bother?". If you look into recent history about the American Red Cross, you see that they have been heavily criticized lately for being a bloated, ineffective and possibly corrupt organization. Maybe you need to design a product that helps individual donors have some confidence that their contributions are actually providing some help to people in other places who are suffering. Of course, I have no idea how you would do that.... steven
