• Summry of my project Part1 (overveiw)

    Well-being

The theme of my thesis is about nursing care, especially issues between caretaker and people who need nursing care.

Objective of this thesis project is how we can solve problems between caretakers, patient and their families, and (or) how we can support their relationship to be better with product design. Product design sounds just a thing which works physically, and someone thinks just about aesthetic and physical functions. However, this project is about to solve more deep matter of human’s mentality and how we can approach the core issue they have in design direction.

The background story of this thesis comes from a friend who is working in the nursing care facility. Now he is afflicted with mental problem because he is gradually influenced by the situation of his work which involves communication problem with his patients and possibly their family. However, this is not only about the mental health of caretakers and their motivation, but also potentially the cause of worse quality of care for people who need nursing care.

The criterion of “A good life” for people depends on individual. But the question is, could “A good life” for the people who need nursing care be consisted without good relationship with their partner? Moreover, there is another relative that the value of nursing care for their family.

What is the real situation; the theme of this thesis project cannot be achieved by only desktop working. Therefore, I would like to research the real situation and real problems that caretaker, patients, and their family has. This could be anything about their relatives, Who, What, Where, When, and How.

  • Hironao:

I really find your topic interesting. In reading the other responses and comments, it looks like there is much interested and potential for collaboration in your project.

I also read what you posted on the Excel chart. I found your description here to be more informational and clearer. What I hear from you is that you are interested in improving the mental and emotional well-being of caretakers who provide care in nursing home and/or rehabilitation centers? I think I hear you saying that communication between these two groups (patients and caregivers) needs to improve. You feel that the well-being of both parties and those around them (coworkers, other patients, families) will improve? Is this correct?

As Anthony mentioned, several facilities specialize in various forms of care (head injuries, elder care, physical rehabilitation, mental rehabilitation, hospice, cancer, HIV/AIDS, etc). You will need to focus your attention on what populations of patients or caregivers you are most concerned. I think this will provide you more ideas and inspiration on your product and help guide your research. It will also give you more head space to generate ideas for your actual product or informational designs.

I hope this is helpful. Please give me your feedback too.

    Jesse

  • Thank you for responding to my topic!!!

After we went through every Monday's class, I finally decided my focal point and my current target area is two field where local care community and home care. These fields are not separated in terms of care working actually. My NFP group which is called Direct Care Alliance is working for direct care workers in both fields. Actually the response that Anthony mentioned was helpful to focus on specific area. After some discussion with my NFP and people who introduced me some other NFP in different country, I decided the field where I focus on. I interviewed with direct care worker through the NFP, and their answer is also very helpful and they guild my project more concretely.

  • I really like your thoughts about the interactions between caretakers and patients. I think in some ways your thesis ideas will be very similar and very different than mine. While I am focusing on the issue of the patient and caretaker in terms of how much waste is generated, I am also focused on people such as diabetes patients who need to take care of themselves. I would be very interested to see if we could swap information. Lately I've been trying to contact nursing services here in NYC such as Visiting Nurse Service of New York, Beth Israel Medical Center Hospice, and Cabrini House Hospice Services. No one seems to want to speak with me. I wonder if you have had any luck? I am really excited to perhaps work one on one with caretakers. I think we can learn a lot from one another's research. I am excited to hear how your thesis develops.

  • Your topic is very interesting. It explores the problems that caused in the process of helping people. There are many professions where individuals work hard to make others' lives easy, safe, and comfortable, but unfortunately those individuals are affected by the various stress that come with the jobs. Many just become depressed after experiencing and witnessing many unpleasant things.

To find a connection in between human relations and using design to help is a very good idea. I myself was initially looking to use product design to help create a solution to police suicide. I really think your project could help a lot of people, good work, keep it going!

  • Hi Hiro

As we talked together the other day, It seems that we are adressing the quite similar issue which is a medical field. Also, the Communication between doctors and patients must be a keyword for both of us. You seem to focus on more mental aspects of medical communications while I am attacking communication troubles caused by low English literacy. Although I have narrowed the cause of my issue to "low literacy" which I think is more visible in a way, I have a feeling that my project has to involve a lot of mental aspects as well. Dealing with human feelings are very sensitive but I think it is worth challenging. There doesn't seem to be "one-size -fits-all solution" that perfectlly works to every single patient since everyone is "different". I feel like the key point of your project is how you treat the diversity of patients and turn it into a single product. This is the same of my project too. There are a lot of things we could share in this same area. I am excited to talk about it more with you.

  • Hospice is an in house end of life care service. You will definitely want to look into Hospice. ( http://www.hospicenet.org ) They not only provide the physical treatment of medication and comfort for people nearing the end of their life they also address the emotional aspect as well. They help families deal with the before and after of a death through groups and services etc. Sadly I have had personal experience with the service and I can attest to how amazing their services are. The patient, care taker interactions are that much more magnified when dealing with the end of life situations.
