• My Design Criteria

Although I am still in the process of deciding on a thesis topic, between the two topics of domestic violence and police suicide, there are important criterias that will play in the design process.

Ethics It is important to me that my design and process do not have harmful effects on the target markets. To maintain their privacy and respect their troubles and their need of time and care is important to me. A good design and process cannot exists when a designer cannot understand or connect with their users on some level, and respecting their boundaries is priority in my process.

Communication Being able to establish a connection between the product and the user is important for the product to have some type of effect or "work" in general. The design should be able to communicate to the user a sense of safety and reflect what they might need emotionally.

Form and Function The form of the design should be welcoming, not intimidating. The function is important and to accomplish the mission of the design, the form should be approachable, easy to use, perhaps, fun, or relaxing. The longterm effect of the design is also important in regards to my thesis topic.

Cost Cost is important to many of the different topics that students will be addressing. Although my targets are not in any means of extreme poverty, some do experience low income, or a moderate level of poverty. If the design is for individuals within the household, the manufacturing process, materials, should all be cheap, and be available to the people who need it without worrying about money.

Texture and Color Texture and color are important characteristics of a product. Although the two can change depending on targets, or design, they are important to help establish connection and use. The color of the product, and even texture should be able to express and communicate the purpose of the design.

  • Hi Emily, I was reading this article ( http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/11/13/cbsnews_investigates/main3496471.shtml ) the other day and I think it has a good parallel to one of your areas of interest. I know your initial interest was in police suicide but right now there is an epidemic of veteran suicides who have served in the Iraq war. I think this goes to show and emphasize that the human cost of this war is far greater than we are lead to believe. I think our surge and continual occupation is resulting in a tremendous loss of Iraq lives and the burden is then carried home with the soldiers resulting in another loss of life. If you choose to pursue the area of veteran suicide I highly recommend watching the six part HBO mini series, Generation Kill. Having served in the military for four years I can attest to the general mentality of soldiers outside of combat so I can only imagine how much more disturbing they become when actually in a war. In addition I still talk to some friends who chose to continue with military service and have served in Iraq and all of them have nothing but horror stories.

    Hey Anthony,

Thanks for you input. That's really interesting. I was actually was talking to Rick about that and I was just wondering if a product could be designed for all of them in general but perhaps that's too much of a large topic. I'll check out the website, and as disturbing as it is... I may be very interested in listening to some of those stories.
