US Green Building Council (USGBC)
Committed to the creation of a sustainable built environment within a generation. Mission is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.
Although I am interested in “green” solutions within the home that make it function more economically, I think that by understanding some of the large issues being tackled with “green” architecture provides a lot of insight regarding how to make products that supplement this idea.
Mission is to empower people of all ages with the vision, knowledge and resources to attain a more environmentally sound and sustainable future. We embrace this mission through unique initiatives that attract tens of thousands of people each year from throughout the five boroughs of NYC and beyond.
Solar One encompasses a lot of environmentally economical issues that I am interested in. Some of those being urban agriculture, alternative energies, distribution of nutrition/food, and educational outreach. As opposed to a more traditional not-for-profit I think solar one does a good job of reaching out to younger generations.
Traditional Nutrition Guild
Is a private delivery club that enables consumers in the NYC area to purchase foods directly from regional farms. We focus on foods that are not easily available in any stores of green markets in NY. Whole foods are directly available from the local farms we work with.
I am very interested in the transportation of foods from local farmers to urban places. I also interested in the subject of genetically modified, organic, and conventional foods. It is important to understand agricultural monocultures and the distribution and consumption of food in not only America but also the entire world. This not-for-profit deals directly with that distribution and seeks to find alternatives.
Healthcare without Harm
International coalition of hospitals and healthcare systems, medical professionals, community groups, health affected constituencies, labor unions, environmental and environmental health organizations and religious groups whose mission is to transform the healthcare sector worldwide without compromising patient safety or care so treatment is ecologically sustainable and no longer a source of harm to public health and the environment.
I am very interested in the proper disposal of medical waste. I feel like it is a large issue with many complicated problems. Domestically and globally, the decisions we make regarding medical waste disposal impacts the environment increasingly. I would like to change the way the waste is handled and educate people on the impact that it has on the environment.
Sustainable South Bronx
Environmental Justice Solutions through innovative economically sustainable projects informed by community needs.
This not-for-profit focuses on the impacts that industrialism, specifically regarding its waste, has on the environment and the immediate people in surrounding areas. The organization deals with making the quality of life better for these people. I think it is a great example of issues that can be applied in many contexts and situations.
Global Green USA
The only national environmental not-for profit organization that works to address some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. In the US our work is primarily focused on stemming global climate change by creating green buildings and cities.
When I was researching I came across this NFP in relation to vertically grown agriculture solutions. That with Urban Agriculture is very important to me. Producing enough quality food to properly feed our country as well as the world is something I would like to pursue.
