AFA was founded on the belief that by raising awareness of the disease and educating healthcare professional and the public at large, it would help remove the stigma of the disease, lead to early detection and proper treatment, result in greater utilization of community resources, and ultimately improve quality of life.

    Cabrini Alzheimer's Care program

    • 227 East 19th st., room 942, NY 10003 Description This program trains volunteers to provide education, support and respite for caregivers of those with mid-to-late stages of Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, and the frail elderly. These specially trained volunteers also engage Alzheimer's, dementia and frail elderly patients in creative arts and storytelling. A nurse practitioner is available to offer home visits to patients providing a holistic approach to the treatment of the disease within the context of the patient's life and preferences. This initiative reflects Cabrini's commitment to families, patients and quality care that volunteers and staff provide.Volunteers provide creative arts services to patients with Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, and the frail elderly and offer their family caregivers education, advocacy and respite care. Volunteers visit patients in their home and in the hospital. Volunteers receive training in the care of patients with Alzheimers disease using creative arts and storytelling techniques to engage the patient. Volunteers hours are flexible. Continuing education and support are provided. We need bilingual (Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Polish and Greek) individuals to join our team of volunteers as well as English speaking volunteers.
