• A personal opinion

I for one don't feel right about the outcome of the UNDFF logo competition, and it's my opinion that many entrants feel the same way. Having seen all the designs I must say that it's no wonder that UNDPI, UN Graphic Design and New School rejected to select a winner from the pool of finalists offered by the Design21's respected jury.

As Design21's director said in her letter MCA-I NY's panel of respectable judges apparently picked differently: "In spite of our protest, MCA-I NY announced to us that their panel of judges including UNDPI, UN Graphic Design and New School selected a design from outside the field of finalists that we had sent to them".

Why? Clearly, having seen all the entries they were not satisfied with the choices of the Design21's selected jury. Now, it's not my intention to question their competence, but in order to select a finalist you must obey certain rules which apply in the world of design.

Here are the rules, it's all well written here:

Judges will be basing their decisions on:

    – Whether the entry contains the required short and full versions of the title and that both short and full versions contain both an icon and title

    – How well the logo would work across online and print media, and the various applications which are outlined above, in terms of legibility, size/area, graphic strength and simplicity etc.

    – How well the logo works as a symbol of the festival and the content and values behind it.

So, knowing these simple rules I think Design21 jury's picks are surprisingly out of this world, at least world of design.
