  • Projected motion images and natural soundtracks in the underground

    Environment, Environmental Design

This is one of the components for the system of Subwait+.

Parts: projector, speaker and motion sensor

    How does it work?

    • All the parts are enclosed by a vandal resistant housing unit, which is installed onto the ceiling in the platform of subway station.
    • Once a person stands below the sensor for more than 10 seconds, the animation and sound would start to play.
    • The animation plays images and sound according to the current weather or station temperature condition. For example, during a hot summer, it would play the motion and sound of a water fall; on the other hand, during spring it would play images of birds in the forest.

    Intended Impact

    • Using appealing sound and visuals to not only distract riders from the painful screech noise but also to stimulate a dynamic and enjoyable moment while waiting for the trains.
  • Hsuan-yang,

I've been invited to give feedback to all Parsons students, regarding your thesis projects.

I like that you've considered a frequently used and oft-ignored public space as the territory for your design solution with Subwait+. It could use a dose of beautification, for sure. And considering the emotional needs of those who wait for subways is a refreshing human-centered approach.

However, your problem statement and proposed solution are missing some key pieces, like cost and how the system will be distributed. Are you focusing on all subway stations, or just one? Are you thinking about who will generate the sound and images? Perhaps this is an opportunity to feature student work or up-and-coming local artists? Or maybe it's the musicians who busk in the subways themselves?

Fun idea. Give us a little more to chew on though, and consider the expense of the technology and who will fund it, etc.

    Thank you! J.
