Born an Army brat in Germany, Katya lived in and toured Europe and the United States during her childhood before finally settling on the East Coast. She later caught the eye of theatre critics while earning her degree in Theatre at the University of the Arts where she developed a cabaret act she performed for several years. After stints in Italy, Boston, and Santa Fe, she returned to Philadelphia to earn her Master’s degree in Fashion Design at Drexel University. During her graduate studies she took an interest in costume, eveningwear, and tailoring, and earned the Lilly Pulitzer Award for Most Creative Graduate Collection. After putting dresses on custom bridal and Nicole Miller clients, she briefly designed mens shirts for her own label (KVK Design), before being scooped up by a local boutique to oversee design and production at the startup, ultimately helping garner numerous awards for the company. Four years later, she began a collaboration with designers Lele Tran and Nicole Haddad at the design co-op US*U.S. while teaching at Moore College of Art and Design and the University of Delaware and consulting for American Trench. She lives in a small row-house in South Philadelphia with her husband where she loves to take pictures, tend to a succulent garden, bake pies, take a yoga class, and hold conversations with their two cats. She believes that all creative efforts are connected, that inspiration can come from anywhere, and in the complete democratization of fashion.
