Did you ever think of moving away from the pit of despair known as California? there's a lot of midwestern cities (KC, Omaha & St. Louis) that are thriving in your field of study and 99% of the places to live have A/C. you'd almost have to specifically look for a place without it. plus i'd imagine it's half the cost of living in LA.
