    I received my copy of Change The World 9 to 5 recently and have to confess that I am now competely smitten with it. Every page is meaningful, important, warm and funny. The whole We Are What We Do movement is totally inspired and happily are going from strength to strength.

    Here's something interesting from the poster included in the back of the book:

    "If your home has something other than a dirt floor, you are in the top half of the world's population.

    If your home has a roof, a door, windows and more than one room, you are in the top 20% If you have refrigeration, you are in the top 5% If you have a car, a microwave, a video, a computer and this toilet has a cubicle door, then you are in the top 1%"

    I am considering buying an extra copy of the the two books and wallpapering the downstairs loo (bathroom!) with them just so that I can see it all regularly - not just the enclosed poster. Perhaps we all should . . . in schools and offices too :-)

    Thriving is also delighted (the jumping up and down variety) that David Robinson OBE, founder and now Chair of WAWWD has just been added to the main Thriving website as an Inspiration :-) Congratulations to all the other creators of the new book.   • Begin Anywhere

    Massive Change</A> [It's not about the world of design. It's about the design of the world] explores the legacy and potential, the promise and power of design in improving the welfare of humanity. It originated as a collaboration between Bruce Mau Design and the Institute without Boundaries in which they researched the capacities and limitations of human efforts to change the world for the better. There is the book Massive Change and the exhibition.

    The Incomplete Manifesto for Growth by Bruce Maue Design is brilliant. It has 43 points on it . . . here are a few:

    • Begin anywhere. John Cage tells us that not knowing where to begin is a common form of paralysis. His advice: begin anywhere.

    • Everyone is a leader. Growth happens. Whenever it does, allow it to emerge. Learn to follow when it makes sense. Let anyone lead.

    • Listen carefully. Every collaborator who enters our orbit brings with him or her a world more strange and complex than any we could ever hope to imagine. By listening to the details and the subtlety of their needs, desires, or ambitions, we fold their world onto our own. Neither party will ever be the same.

    • Laugh. People visiting the studio often comment on how much we laugh. Since I've become aware of this, I use it as a barometer of how comfortably we are expressing ourselves.

    • Don’t be cool. Cool is conservative fear dressed in black. Free yourself from limits of this sort.

  • Garden of Happiness

    A great story about roof top gardening and community:

    "The Garden of Happiness is a sunny community garden with vegetable plots, a chicken coop, a corrugated-tin shed, and a few chairs beneath a grape arbor, where the chicken committee is meeting. The chicken committee is a lot more committee than chicken, its deliberations filled with references to “existing chicken situations” and “pursuit of newer egg opportunities,” and the slightly skeptical neighborhood people have to be gently won over by the carefully beaming professionals."

    Launched in Japan by art director Yuji Tokuda and producer Junya Ishikawa, retired weaponsTM design project combines incisive graphic design with a straight message of peace, through a variety of tools including also its distinctive and iconic elements

    The tank as well as all the other retired weaponsTM design elements - rifles and guns, land mines and bombs - carry flowers to spread the message of peace through clear and comprehensive signs and gestures. Retired weaponsTM design project aims at contributing to make 21st century an era of dialogue.

    Retired Weapons . . . I love the bird twittering too :-)

  • How to be Creative Manifesto

    Hugh MacLeod, an advertising executive and popular blogger with a flair for the creative, gives his 26 tried-and-true tips for being truly creative. Each point illustrated by a cartoon drawn by the author himself.

    This document is really honest, imaginative and meaningful - it gives some seriously fantastic advice to anyone even thinking of being creative in any way.

    Just a few inspired things he writes:

    "Good ideas alter the power balance in relationships, that is why good ideas are always initially resisted.

    The sovereignty you have over your work will inspire far more people than the actual content ever will.

    Put the hours in; do it for long enouth and magical life-transforming things happen eventually.

    The creative person basically has two kinds of jobs. One is the sexy, creative kind. Second is the kind that pays the bills.

    Doing something seriously creative is one of the most amazing experiences one can have, in this or in any other lifetime."

  • The Progressive Organic Cultivation Project

    Progress was originally devised for drug rehabilitation and is now an organization helping communities for tomorrow. It has been running in deprived areas of London inner cities since 2004.

    Simon Ghartey, founder of Progress describes the Project: "We have been persuaded by the local authorities to start in primary schools in deprived parts of South London. The reasoning is to re-use city space for the purpose of growing organic fruit and vegetables, and horticulture. This Organic Cultivation project has been devised on the basis of a crop rotational plan that we have been involved in Clapham Park, South London.

    Since the start we have worked with communities that do not have this service at their disposal. The majority do not own their own green space as they live in the inner city concrete. At present we are working within the three local primary schools and have re-designed part of a local park. The redesign is serving the purpose of an allotment space for two of the schools that do not have much green space within their grounds."

  • Barefoot College IS changing the world

    Solar power was first used in 1986 on a large scale, to completely energise the 80,000 square foot Barefoot College campus at Tilonia. The College campus now is totally self-sufficient with a 40 kilowatt solar energy unit meeting all its energy needs.

    The College by training rural unemployed youth as well as semi-literate and literate rural women, as barefoot solar engineers, from different part of the country, have since 1986, installed solar home lighting systems in their villages. They also fabricate and produce solar lanterns. More than 200 kilowatt solar energy is being generated across the country thorough systems and lanterns.

    Barefoot solar engineers have installed solar photovoltaic (SPV) home lighting systems and fabricated produced solar lanterns across 10 states of India. The results include, among many:

    Solar electrifying 300 adult education centres. Solar electrifying 870 schools across the country. 3530 solar lanterns manufactured at the College. 195,000 litres of kersoene saved, by replacing generators and oil lanterns with solar power.

    Badakshan (pic) is the first village to be fully solar electrified in Afghanistan - thanks to Barefoot College
