Literacy Assistance Center (LAS) The Literacy Assistance Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the expansion of quality literacy services in New York.

Maimonides Medical Center At almost 100 years old, Maimonides Medical Center remains a vital and thriving non-profit, non-sectarian hospital. It is the pre-eminent treatment facility and academic medical center in the Borough of Brooklyn. Maimonides provides culturally sensitive care for patients who aren’t fluent in English is important. One of our priorities is facilitating better health care access for non-English speaking patients and their families. To achieve this goal and to serve our culturally diversified community, the Medical Center has been recruiting multilingual physicians, nurses and staff, especially for patient care areas.

The Commonwealth Fund The Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation that aims to promote a high performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society's most vulnerable, including low-income people, the uninsured, minority Americans, young children, and elderly adults. The Fund carries out this mandate by supporting independent research on health care issues and making grants to improve health care practice and policy. An international program in health policy is designed to stimulate innovative policies and practices in the United States and other industrialized countries.

    Sugarcane charcoal

Formal Criteria (shape, texture, material, color, scale) After sugarcane is pressed to extract the sugar contained within the plant, a large amount of fibrous waste remains. This waste is known as bagasse. Typically, bagasse is burned in the fields. They use a special formula to convert bagasses into charcoal which doesn’t give off harmful gas in the air. With this new fuel people no longer have to worry about being sick from smoke while they are cooking indoor.

Functional (uses) Alternative fuel to wood charcoal.

Ethical (fairness and social impact) Wood charcoal produced by logging primeval forest has been used in Haich where the deforestation is a serious social problem. Also many children die of respiratory infections from breathing indoor cooking fumes.

Cost (who can afford it?) I don’t know exact price but since this product is made out of the material that usually goes to waste, it must be inexpensive.

    Dynamic tower

Formal Criteria (shape, texture, material, color, scale) Dynamic tower will reach 80 floors, and will be 420m / 1,380ft tall. There are some innovating features that distinguish this building from others. First, the segmented tower design will have a center concrete core and allow each floor to continuously, slowly rotate at different speeds, using voice recognition technology and giving those inside an ever-changing view. Secondly, The twisting design uses photovoltaic cells and wind turbine technology to collect enough ener...

Possible issue/ problem areas for your thesis project that I have passion for ---- Medical care

What's the context/understanding you have about the issue/problem? 1.Literacy and medical care ----- More than one-third of American adults have only basic or below-basic literacy in health matters, Sometimes they can't even read a label to determine if a product is for a head cold or diarrhea, or administer a proper dose to oneself or a child. 2.Rehabilitation tools and medical care ----- The other day, I came across the article talking about Nintendo Will as a rehabilitation tool. Thanks to the new technology, patients now have better rehabilitation experience than ever before. According to the article, they really enjoy a rehabilitation process playing TV games with a lot of physical motion. This article made me think that I could change the conventional image of rehabilitation tools and make something much more fun.

Identify initial ideas or existing products for addressing this problem by product design. 1.There are so many medical errors that could have been prevented by medical equipments properly designed or better communication between doctors and patients. one of the most careless and common medical errors is that patients take wrong or an over amount of medicines at home due to the unclearness of dose descriptions or explanations from doctors. Especially children, elderly people, non-English speakers tend to have this kind of problem. In the worst case patients die f...

    Mouse_177_

People sometime suffer a list pain from using a mouse for long time and for those who have a weak grip, it is not even an easy task to manipulate a mouse. You can move a pointer on the screen by rolling the track ball without moving the mouse itself at all. It is so easy to use this mouse. In fact, it only requires a palm or even just one finger to roll the track ball. Also its ergonomic shape allows uses to hold the body comfortably. This product was originally developed for making ordinal use's mouse experience better, but due to its usefulness, many people who have a problem with grip are now using this product as well. According to the company, it is possible to use this product by foot or chin with a little practice.

Imagine the place where you spend most of your time each day. where is it? - School

Imagine it as you most want it to be.

1.What is your #1 vision for change that will make it that way? To make our school a place where students can interact to each other regardless of majors. In my opinion, the way the school spaces out each mojor in different buildings is not sufficient for the interaction between students in different majors.

    1. After your #1 thing happens, how will everyone benefit? Students will be able to hang out more often and share the information about what they are studying in their major. I think this interaction will give students a more wider point of view on design study.
    2. Give some example of what you can do (on your own/with a group) to make your vision a reality. Design social places like a cafeteria or small campas that students form different majors can easily access.

Imagine your neighborhod the way you most want it to be.

1.What is your #1 vision for change that will make it that way? To make my neighborhod a more secure place at night time so that people can walk around even after sunset.

    1. After your #1 thing happens, how will your neighborhood benefit? People don't feel fear of being robbed or anything while they are out at night time.
    2. Give some example of what you can do (on your own/with a group) to make your vision a reality. Put more street lumps to light up streets. Have policemen patrol more often to prevent crimes.
