These are my favorite 5 choices. their images + the map are all presented in the image attached to this post.
1. Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden:
Formal criteria: it’s a 54-story high building (630 feet) which stands in a flat landscape with no other tall building in sight. The tower consists of nine cubes that are torqued through 90 degrees from top to bottom.
It is made of concrete, and supported by glass & steel curtain walls.
It has trapezoidal shaped windows, and an exposed structural "spine" on one side of the building that reinforces the anthropomorphic analogy of the building.
The dominating color is a matte monochrome color (light grey). The torqued design is an enlargement of Calatrava’s 1991 steel and marble sculpture, “Twisting Torso”, which depict the twist of the human torso, when the head turns into a different direction than to which the body is aligned with. Functional criteria: the building is used as a residential apartment building. Ethical criteria: the form gives “life” and “personality” to the building in which human beings are living in. It is a way to give the residents the feeling that they are not living in a cold, concrete, modern material-based object, but rather in a living form that acts and moves like they do. it is some sort of a flux, a design within motion that causes the building to interact with its environment and context. Cost criteria: the building is oriented to the upper class level of society. It is consider to be very expensive. s for the material and processes used - the shapes glass windows, and their sizes, therefore the amount needed elevate the cost of production. Also the use of the steel frame + spine is unique to this building - not using a modular, or market standard size material, therefore increasing the costs even more.
2. The “Blade Runner” : A carbon fiber blades as substitution for feet, made for athletic sprinters.
Formal criteria: the object is based on the cheetah (tiger) flex foot. The main element is made of a carbon fiber (very strong and light material), it has sprinters shoes' spike screwed at the bottom, and at the top it attaches to the amputee with 2 string+Velcro laces (to adjust to user). The main part has a 'U' shape, in order for it to be flexible enough to hold up to 147Kg (user's max weight) and yet to spring back under that weight. the main part has a black/metallic color with a woven texture due to it's fiber weaving process of making. Functional criteria: the product functions as if it were an ankle. Absorbing body weight when the foot hits the ground, and springing the body forward once the cycle of the landing was completed. It adds more strength and accelerate the forward movement, like a human muscle, although theoretically an apparently it works even better due to the fact that more weight can add to the force of acceleration generated from the spring.(a fact that caused the Olympics Athletic Federation to disqualify the use of this object in the regular Olympics, and approving it only to the Paralympics). Ethical criteria: An object that suddenly equalizes an amputee to any other Olympic class athlete, by using modern materials (carbon fiber) and basic physics. The social impact of this product is amazing, it gives hope, aspiration and the sense of achieving the dream goals of any handicap person, and teaching the "regular" people that handicap people, with the right attitude and use of design possibilities, can do it all. "nothing is impossible". Cost criteria: Carbon fiber is a very expensive material. this product is aiming at a very specific and limited group of athletes and not at mass production. other, cheaper materials can be used if needed to address the daily users.
3. Provia A1 GPS system: A product to present to the user a 3D Global Positioning System. It uses a combination of between 24 - 32 satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, that enable GPS receivers to calculate the device's present position, time, velocity and direction.
Formal criteria: The device is very thin in comparison to the other devices on the market. it uses 3D graphics displayed on a Samsung 800 x 480 resolution wide screen - touchscreen 7-inch display. The main materials in use are Polycarbonate touch screen, Aluminum case and LED screen (inside it has a Melamine circuit board on which the metallic chips are mounted) . it is the same size as an Iphone (4.5"x2.4"x0.46").
Functional criteria: Basically it is used to help the user get from point A to point B, but instead of laying an overview map in front of you it produces a real 3D view that includes the amount of surrounding info that you choose (restaurants, hospitals, etc.). The device touchscreen has handwriting recognition for quickly keying in address or other other information. Navigation uses super-detailed, razor-sharp 3D maps, complete with models of buildings and other landmarks.it also contains a 520MHz Intel PXA270 processor and has 128MB of RAM, an SD expansion slot (for up to 2 GB worth of memory), stereo speakers, USB 2.0 connectivity, AV inputs and audio in/out jacks. The operational system is WinCE.net 5.0. It has a media player with audio and full screen video playback. It has a "picture-in-picture" (PIP) mode, so you can simultaneously watch a movie and get directions. It also features a "DMB" receiver so you can receive over-the-air (OTA) digital television broadcasts. the device plays DivX, XviD, H.264, WMA, WMV, OGG, mp3, MPEG-4 formats. Ethical criteria: The impact of this device is that first it combines almost all the devices we usually use in our daily routine into one small object that has the most modern technology on the market. Second, it represent reality in a 3D graphic way, and helps people to orient themselves in unfamiliar territories. it is like a personal satellite that helps you find your needs in any given moment. On the other hand it spoils the user and atrophies our survival instincts, memory and we become depended on this device in our orientation and knowledge of our surroundings. Cost criteria: the device will come out in few months and it is aimed for anyone who would be willing to spend around 500US$
4. Nike Shox" - Formal criteria: The change that Nike made in their SHOX series is all in the heels of their sneakers. They converted the flat sole into 4 or more pillars (made from the same material as the rest of the sole - either rubber or EVA) the other material nike uses is the cheapest there is (so far...) - Air. pressurized air to fill the pillars and create the cushioning affect. The pillars become part of the design of the shoe, with changing colors, textures, etc, according to the shoe style and function (running, basketball,etc.). Functional criteria: With Nike's help and their shox suspension system the user's heels are stepping on 4 or more air-pressurized pillars (act as air pistons), which are part of the rear shoe sole. the air inside the sole's pillars is suppose to absorb the impact of the heel touching the floor surface while walking or running. the heel feels most of the body mass, if not separated from the floor with the right absorbing material - the impact grows (when using hard material soles). impact and an uneven terrain surface no longer form a threat on runners for twisted ankles and falls. The bottom of the shoe adjust itself, just like any jeep wheel suspenders, to the surface, leaving the body leveled and balanced. Ethical criteria: Nike use this system to address an issue besides the physical care of our back problems. psychologically the user feels like flying, he/she walks on air, separated from others, who actually "touch the ground", nike's users are literally hover above all danger. the sole actually react and adjust to different obstacles on the surface by diverting air inside the pillars from side to side, keeping the user foot straight and out of danger. . Cost criteria: The fact that the sole is more "protective" and it is a kind of a gimmick make the shoe mre expensive than regular sole shoes. the price range is 85-150US dollars.
5. Konstantin Grcic's Chair One (2003):
Formal criteria: The materials the chair is made of are treated aluminum, polyester powder coat, concrete base. The base is clear coat concrete with a die-cast and powder coated aluminum seat. Swivel with self-returning mechanism. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The surface of the seat is a little coarse due to the Polyester powder coat. the structure is affected, because its materials (concrete, Aluminum) from room/outside temperature. Available colors are: red, black, black and white. dimensions are: 31.5” h X 21.8" w X 23.3" d X18.3" seat the chair is also available is 4 aluminum legs version which the user can stack. The shape of the structure is based on solid geometric shapes which play between the 2D and the 3d world (just as if you would cut and unfold a soccer ball...) Functional criteria: The chair is used in mainly in public place, where people don't have to seat for a long period of time. (airports, restaurants, shopping malls). It is used both in indoors and outdoors. Ethical criteria: the chair questions the form of a chair as we consciously know it and perceive it. it also deals with the limits of certain industrial processes (die cast aluminum for example). And finally it questions geometric forms and their analysis in relation to human beings, anthropology and ergonomics. Cost criteria: the price range is $866-$1200 US dollars.
