The research bibliography that i have found and used until this point and how am i going to use and relate this information to my study:
Academic journals -
- Hotez, Peter J. "MEDICAL BIOLOGY: ON HOOKWORM INFECTION." New England journal of Medicine 799th ser. (2004). This journal will give me concrete data and info regarding the consequences of the hookworms penetrating the body. Reasons, problems, solutions from a medical point of view.
Gamboni, Dario. Nature Design : From Inspiration to Innovation. Ed. Angeli Sachs. New York, NY: Springer, 2007. This book will help me to relate my design to natural phenomena, nature behavior, and eventually to design my form and use of materials correctly and in a sustainable manner.
Mau, Bruce, and Jennifer Leonard. Massive Change : The Future of Global Design. New York, NY: Phaidon P, 2004. This book is more about perception and the goal of my design. A little more abstract than the other books, but it is kind of a thinking method to follow.
Bauer, Henry H. THE ORIGIN, PERSISTENCE AND FAILINGS OF HIV/AIDS THEORY. 1st ed. Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 2007. This is a source for scientific facts, theories and statistics regarding the causes of the HIV virus in our world's population.
Smith, Cynthia. Design for Other 90 Percent. New York, NY: Assouline, 2007. This book is more of an inspiration catalyst, to see how other designer approach the low-tech design for needs of "the other 90%" population in various places around the world, with different conditions and challenges.
Jarrow, Gail. Hookworms. New York, NY: Greenhaven P, Incorporated, 2003. This is medical/scientific information source for dealing with the hookworms problem in Africa.
- God Grew Tired of Us. Dir. Christopher D. Quinn and Tom Walker. Perf. John Dau, Daniel Pach, Panther Bior. 2006. A movie about the "lost boys" that ran away from Sudan (during the war) to Kenya and finally brought to USA. conflicts of tradition, modernism, technology, culture, etc. helps to understand the difficulties of African people in regard to objects, behavior, norms that are part of our daily routine, but are totally new, strange and unsuitable for others from other parts of the world. Form, functionality, texture, size, usage of a product should consider the user and its context. This movie helps to understand the gap, possible differences and basically open our eyes and mind to something else than what we take for granted...

The affect of donations, "salvation" form the western world towards Africa, that eventually eliminate any chance for real African local entrepreneurship. the political and financial problems in Africa, etc. to understand to what kind of surrounding am i designing for, what other problems they are dealing with in every day life. maybe some solutions are possible through my design.
