Ethical: adults and children can use it together. Size: 2” x 2.5” x 3/4”. Cost: about $300. It may not be affordable for various income levels.

Lung Ashtray Formal: it is made of transparent plastic and aluminum. It looks like human organ, lung which has very close connection with smoking. Functional: It is an ashtray that shows how harmful smoking is to people. Ethical: Not only smoker use, but also non-smoker get warning. It is a kind of campaign product. Cost: I do not know about the cost.

Window Alarm Formal: simple and clean shape alert product. Functional: It gives awareness to people when windows open. Ethical: it is simple to set up and use for varies age users. Cost: $7.99. It is affordable.

Missing children

Nearly 800,000 children are reported missing each year, for a variety of reasons: some children run away, others may become lost or injured, and still others are abducted. Most child abductions—more than 200,000 annually—are committed by family members, abductions, totaling 58,200 annually in the United States, nearly all 98% of these children are returned to their family safely. Only a small percentage are those every overnight, held for ransom, or killed. Many family members who lost their children are infatuated with looking for them instead of taking care of their lives. Sometimes, they quit their jobs to go to the street for looking for their children, they distribute leaflets to passers-by, or they spend a lot of money to advertise for their missing children. Therefore, their economy is getting worse and their home becomes corrupted. In addition, other children, who are not looked after by their parents, become crooked Therefore, missing children issue is not only a problem for a home, but also a big problem in our society.

Existing products for addressing this problem by product design: A device that has GPS system helps parents release from anxiety.

I think this issue affects most family who have children or family who have missing children.

My next step is researching and understanding about children’s behaviors and thought.

Hurricane

When summer season comes, people in particular locations get afraid of a disaster, called hurricane. In every year, many hurricanes occur in the world and many people are dying or suffering because of it. Some of the people are miserable because they lost their property such as houses, cars, or money. The others are desperate because they lost their families. Year by year, the damage from hurricane is getting increased and there are so many hurricane sufferers on earth. Moreover, according to the article, ‘Hurricane Katrina Increased Mental And Physical Health Problems In New Orleans By Up To Three Times’ they are suffering from poor mental and physical health. I think hurricanes that come every year are one of the biggest problems for human.

I desire to design a non-profit product that stimulates people to donate some money to hurricane sufferers.

my issue is the most affected to hurricane sufferers who lost their precious things. They can build their house or get medical care by it.

I am going to interview with people who have an experience about hurricane, doctors, and community members about hurricane.

My next step is research more about hurricane and contact with those people who suffered from it.

I think this product; lung ashtray, produced by German insurance company AOK shows intersection. Actually, ashtray is made for smokers and most ashtrays are purchased by smokers. However, this product affects to also non-smokers. It has not only an original function that contains cigarette ash, but also an extra function that gives awareness to smokers and non-smokers.

What’s the context/understanding you have about the issue/problem?

---Since cigarette was invented, the popularity of smoking has increased. Many youth, man, woman, or even pregnant woman smoke, and it is able to cause adults disease, lung cancer, harmless of growing, or malformation of the embryo. Moreover, there are so many people in the world who are suffering from second-hand smoke such as children who have smokers in their families. Second-hand smoke is poisonous and has over 4000 chemicals, including 50 that can cause cancer. Breathing second-hand smoke can be more dangerous than inhaling smoke through a cigarette. It has twice as much nicotine and tar as the smoke that people smoking inhale and five times more carbon monoxide, a deadly gas that starves human body of oxygen. Therefore, smoking problem is one of the biggest issues in the world.

A few months ago, one of my friends told me that he didn’t know where he could find a reason that he must stop smoking. He is a heavy smoker and has been smoking for 10 years but he hasn’t even tried to quit smoking because he doesn’t know why it’s harmful. Of course he knew that it is harmful and many people are dying because of smoking. However, he doesn’t think it will be his story because he has never seen it.

Introduction: “Funcy” is a thesis project by Ilanit Ovadya, parsons’ product design graduate of 2007. The problem this project deals with is furniture packaging waste in urban environments. The designer wanted to find a solution to this specific waste problem by designing a flat-packed work-station and eliminating its packaging aspect by its form and usage. The elements been used for packaging become the product’s accessories after assembly, leaving no waste behinds. The target users are young people with limited living spaces.

Non profit organization involved: •Cenyc – Council on the environment of New York City •O2nyc- environmental sustainability through design •Rainforest Relief – protection over world’s tropical rain forests

Identifying projects’ strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths- •Easy mounting / dismounting process •A variety of optional accessories hanging/tying/adding methods. •No use of extra material (without screws, bolts, etc.)

Weaknesses- •Furniture packaging (usually 2-layer corrugated cardboard) is recyclable, is it really a big waste problem in urban environments?

•The product acts as its own packaging – no damage protection over the product different parts (during transportation, moving, etc.)

•Product form is dictated (no options to fit personal/space needs) •The product is a “temporary use” product, after its short life time it becomes waste by itself....

1. What is your vision for change that will make it that way? My room is always dusty because of the roadway near my apartment. I want to use a wearable cleaning device like a slipper for removing dust.

2. After your #1 thing happens, how will everyone benefit? Everyone will not need to bend their backs to wipe their floors with wet duster; therefore, they won't spend their energy that they can do more worth thing than wiping floor.

3. Give some examples of what you can do (on your own/with a group) to make your vision a reality. Auto cleaning machine already exists but many people cannot afford the high price machine. Moreover, some of busy people, who don't have a time, need to do exercise with the cleaning gesture because it waists a lot of energy from human body. It should be affordable and used by minimum energy for cleaning.
