    Design brief

Although people are rich or poor, missing children issue is one of the common concerns that all parents have had or are having while they are raising their precious children. Although portable electric technology is developed such as cell phone, approximately 800,000 children are reported missing each year. My mission statement is to create a product that helps locate and prevents missing children. The target age is 3 to 5 year old-children who do not memorize their information such as their home phone number, home address, or parents’ name. Sometimes it is hard to understand those aged children’s behavior with our sense. They tend to be absorbed in everything around them and like to play with it, so they could forget where they are or their parents are. Besides, they are in a defenseless about abduction without custody and impervious to reason, so they easily succumb to temptation from stranger. Even if the time that children are missing is short like one hour or less, it is the most horrible time for their parents. Therefore I think it is very good challenge to create a product that prevent missing children. My product for this project will be portable, durable, affordable and semi permanent. Preferentially, it will contain technology to locate the children but it will have simple and clear interface for both children and parents’ using. It will contain children’s information to easily return home when they are found on the street by people. Moreover, it will give awareness to people who try to abduct them. My product will be manufactured in China to reduce cost

    Proposal

My proposal is to design for children and their parents to make their lives comfortable without concerning about missing.

    • Enforcing to check genetic information for a newborn baby and parturient under the law and government manages and uses it for the purpose when children are missing or missing children are found.
    • All children must have a device that contains thheir information or DNA, a device that shows the location where children are, or a device giving awareness to people, who try to abduct children, not to approach them until they reach the age that they can active without custody.
  • Shinwoo, this is interesting, but please now go back and look at the Anatomy of a Thesis outline below. You need to be thinking about all of these items as you write your Design Brief. You need to be thinking about all of these things now. This one page version should be a summary of the eventual document that you will complete by the end of the Fall semester. steven

    1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (Fall/Spring): one page abstract describing your thesis – the short story

    2. BACKGROUND (Fall) a. Design Mission/Approach – what is YOUR point of view? (September) b. NFP: Mission + Stakeholders (September/October…) i. Which NFP’s have a mission that tackles the issues you would like to address? ii. Where is there overlap with your own mission? iii. How will you contact + interact with your NFP? iv. What design opportunities are provided by your NFP’s inititatives? v. Who are the stakeholders in your design process? c. Greater Issues – how is society potentially impacted by this project? (Sept/Oct)

    3. DESIGN RESEARCH (Fall…) a. Review of existing literature + Quantitative data on problem (Sept/Oct) b. Interviews + Qualitative data gathering (Oct…) c. Observations (Field research) (Oct…) d. Participatory Exercises (Field research) (Oct…)

    4. DESIGN PRECEDENT (Sept/Oct): designers + projects/products that provide models and inspiration

    5. PROBLEMS/OPPORTUNITIES (Sept/Oct): what did your design research reveal? a. Mapping exercises (Mapping Design Criteria, Chain of Influences, Matrix)

    6. STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT + USER SCENARIOS (Oct/Nov…) a. Map existing + potential relationships of your stakeholders and how your thesis idea/product connects them b. Design of Charrette + Planning with NFP c. Analysis of findings

    7. DESIGN CRITERIA (Oct/Nov)

    8. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT (Sept…): include summaries + evaluations of concepts at various stages

    9. PACKAGING + INSTRUCTIONS (Spring)

    10. PROTOTYPE TESTING (Spring) a. Design of testing scenario + Planning with appropriate users (NFP + others) b. Analysis of findings c. Design refinements + Re-testing

    11. COST ANALYSIS (Materials 4 + Spring)

    12. INTENDED MANUFACTURE + DISTRIBUTION (Materials 4 + Spring)

    13. NEXT STEPS: what potential does this project have to move forward? (December + April)

    14. BIBLIOGRAPHY (September…)

  • Thanks Steven~ I'm reading it now~
