  • Sams Alternative Transportation Survey

    Communication

1 When in New York City, what is your main mode of transportation?

2 When would you take a Cab as oppose to any other mode of transportation?

3 On a scale of 1-5, 5 being best, how high is your satisfactory for the MTA public transit system?

4 Do you own a bicycle? If no, what would it take to get you on a bicycle?

5 If you are a bicycle rider, what would be your number one concern?

6 If there was such a thing as a Bike Share Program, or a Bike Rental Program at many spots in the city where you rent a bike in one place and drop it off at a spot close to your destination, would you use it?

sam, This is a terrific questionnaire, because I think people will be happy to take a few minutes to fill it out and send you their responses. Its a subject that everyone has an opinion about, and most people love to be asked their opinion about things they care about.

Be careful about using "leading questions": in question number 4, you say, "what would it take to get you on a bicycle". This sounds like you are saying, "hey, dummy, how come you aren't riding to work on a bike, what are you, an irresponsible waster of finite resources?" As the experimenter, you must maintain strict neutrality. Respondents should not be able to guess your position on the issue from parsing the questions. This is sometimes very hard to do if you are passionate about something, but it is crucial.

Now, the next important issue will be figuring out who to send the questionnaire to. It sounds like you are targeting regular people here who are deciding whether or not to ride a bicycle in the city. If you were trying to get information from policy makers, you would have chosen different questions I assume. So, where will you come up with a list of people to solicit for your survey? steven

  • sam, I really liked your survey. Can I talk about it in my presentation about interpreting data from surveys at monday's class? How many responses did you get? can you please write a couple of paragraphs based on the results of this work and send it to me by tomorrow (sunday) afternoon? Let me know. Thanks. steven
