Identify 2 possible issue /problem areas for your thesis project that you have passion for

Since earthquake is damage to human life, so it effect many victims. I would like to use my design knowledge to help them improving their life.

What’s the context /understanding you have about the issue/problem?

I would like to design the product that is the connection with earthquake issue. When new York resident use and look the product, they will notice earthquake issue.

Identify initial ideas or existing products for addressing this problem by product design.

In reality wealthy and educated people are more powerful and capable, so they can help victims. I would design the product which’s design brief is identify earthquake victim issue. This concept can bring up people’s sympathy in order to sell the product increasing profit to no profit organization.

What’s the premise/reasoning that makes your solution ideas a viable response to the problem?

Because most of earthquake victims are in low-income, they don’t have enough money to provide their basic demand.

Identify who is most affected by your issues. How they will benefit from your thesis idea?

Earthquake victims will get the money from no profit organization, as a result they can improve their life.

Who do you want to interview or collaborate with from those who are affected by the issue your project addresses(NFP, community members, individuals)?

    Red cross organization

What’s your next step? After improving their basic demand, victims can afford protecting products. The next step is to design student study table which can protect students when earthquake happen.

Intersection1:from the product your chose for 3C, or a product you admire , choose one physical detail that shows an intersection of mechanical function and critical thinking about a bigger problem (remember the example about the OXO grips). With sketches(exploded axonometric, mechanical drawings)show why you believe this product intersection is successful, and if possible, suggest improvements. post an image of the product and your analytical drawings.

Hidaeki Matsui’s Clean Up sop is excellent example. This soap is a symbol to this concept which clean up the landmines in Cambodia. This perfect simple concept that is doing an everyday activity and makes it into this issue that helps a nation from side to side performing this daily activity.

  • Hey Sam, I was reading through some of your blog posts. I am not sure if you have changed your thesis ideas at all but dealing with earthquakes is a very interesting topic. In America I am not really used to earthquakes. Our typical natural disasters are hurricanes, flooding and forest fires (although not always "natural ) I forget that in the "ring of fire" area of the Pacific that major earthquakes his several times a year. I can only recall the one major earthquake in San Francisco in 1989. Heck we even name our sports teams after the disaster. That just goes to show you how seriously we take them.

My initial reaction was to say that it would be hard target a demographic that could benefit from a pre-earthquake product but it quickly became obvious to me that there is a region in the world that suffers from frequent earthquakes.

You, Nicole and I have all a similar area and each of us are addressing a different aspect. We all have disasters as the crux of the issue but you are going towards a pre-disaster product, Nicole is doing a more post-disaster product and I am looking more towards post-disaster communication, which obviously could be a product as well.

I think all three areas are important when dealing with disasters and the aftermath . I forget to reflect on other areas of the world sometimes and I think that is why I want to address areas outside of the US for my thesis. A lot of the Parsons student body is lucky to have childhood traveling diversity and such. I simply went from upstate NY to downstate NY..weeeeee what a world traveler I am.
