    Communication, Communication Design

Over the break I’ve been doing lots of design concepts, knowing that the biggest issues in a relationship between couples is communication and trust. So, then I asked myself how would I design a product where the product could send out a message that can trigger users to communicate and interact with one another in a healthy relationship manner.

Designing these two ideas I’m leaning towards something iconic, maybe with a slogan.

One idea is this bag of chips, where the bag opens up to two openings and can be shared without any interruption of taking turns or clash when two users trying to grab chips out of the bag. Instead users would have their personal space of grabbing their chips while the possibility of hand contact in between the bottom of the chip bag.

The other idea is to design a collection of sportswear with pocket slots that are meaningful placed onto the garments. And users will be able to use these pocket slots to show their affections, emotions depending on the users action of interacting with the pockets. These two concepts lead to the conjunction of ideas that can communicate the language of Self-identity and Romance through interactive design.

I’ve also contacted many NFPs that have relations to my thesis but no organizations are interested working with a student at this moment and some just haven’t reply to my statements. And as of now, the day of the user testing I will have my prototypes ready for them to interact, and will be filmed and d...

  • MID YEAR REVIEW.

    Communication, Communication Design

After the first critic review, I’ve gotten many positive feedbacks from the presentation of my thesis project and again my mission is to provide couples with interactive designs that act to resolve the various obstacles of courtship and help themselves preserve and grow as individuals. Most of the critics said that my thesis project has a lot of potential covering on the problem of miscommunication and trust, mean while it is difficult to solve various obstacles in a relationship with a product. Some said maybe the only way is for couples to read relationship books, which are out in the market and they are actually effective. Majority of the critics find it exciting and easily relate to my concept but it needs more research to back up the basis of thesis, in terms of a psychological, sociological, a physical manifestation of my product that can establish the needs for trust and well communication. So far my “bed” and “daily diary” concepts came across the closest. The critics and I also agreed on staying away from sex products, instead focusing on human interaction, and wanting more developments of new drawings and ideas.

I have made drawings through different ideas in the area of furniture, fashion, products, and I need a solid direction to move on to my next step. A wise comment I’ve received was to do research on the most commonly used product by both men and women and elaborate it from there on. Through research, I found that men and women speak a ...

Over the weekend, I brought myself to a bookstore located in st marks that open till late. As I browsed and wandered around the design section of the bookstore I came across to a book called “sex designs” by Max Rippon. The book was really helpful due to the fact that I am focusing on interactive design in terms of courtship and self-identity.

First product was called the “Blobb Tiles” designed by Analia Segals, it was created to stimulate the users mind by thinking that the tiles were melting or wanting to kiss someone. The materials are 6x6 white tiles for bathrooms, it gives the user a playful environment with smooth and liquidize vibe even though tiles are solid rock hard. Second product that caught my attention was the “Hug shirt” by the company called Cute Circuit. The hug shirt is wearable; it communicates through telecommunication technology, fashion design, human vs. human interaction, and design with emotion. Basically, it’s a shirt that allows you to send hugs over distance to your love ones. And also, there are sensors that are embedded in the fabric so that one can feel the strength of the touch, warmth of ones body, and also the heartbeat rate of the sender. Third product that stresses on interactive design that I spotted in the book is the “Hug salt & pepper shaker” by Alberto Mantilla. It is made out of Porcelain, when the shakers aren’t in use; it plays an act of love when two shakers come together and hug each other. Firth pro...
