    Thomas Tan

Bio Thomas Tan was born in Manhattan but lived in Queens, Taiwan, New Jersey, and now currently lives in Brooklyn. At the age of two, weekends were shared with his mother drawing Batman figures, and ever since then, observational drawings became an interest of his. He is now pursuing that passion at Parsons School of Design for Product Design. His interests include, but are not limited to, art, design, sneakers, music, film, and photography. Thomas believes that inspiration can be found in everything, and that anything can be improved no matter how small, big, or insignificant it may seem.

    Mid-Review/2nd User testing summary

Research-I was told that the problems that I am targeting are too broad and too many big ideas are being introduced but not yet established in my designs. Most suggested to narrow my ideas down and to do more research on human physical interaction and how it will strengthen intimacy in relationships.

Prototypes/Designs-Majority of the critics enjoyed my project and meanwhile I’ve gotten various different opinions and perspectives regarding of my “next steps/thesis”. Critics told me that I should be concerned with how couples interact with each other during courtship in different scenarios.

+Most critics identified the biggest issue of my prototype during the review and it was coherent to the same problem I had during my user testing. The problem with my first prototype was that the garment itself was meant to be one user only and had the option of sharing with another person by expanding the garment larger, which would be your love one.

The question was then asked by many critics and users that what if the other user that didn’t purchase the garment wanted to wear it by themselves but can’t separate from one and another, wouldn’t it be better if the garment was able to separate into 2 individual pieces? This idea is beneficial for couples that want a stronger intimacy during courtship while they are sharing one garment, because now couples are able to separate from each other when one or both users need to have personal ...

My mission is to enhance courtship through strengthening of emotional bonds while preserving self-identity using interactive design.

Through research, men and women speak a different language and cope stress differently. The most common issues within a relationship is the lack of trust for one another and that leads to lack of understanding of each other’s behaviors and causes misleading communication. Also, it is important to preserve self-identity during a relationship, because it can be lost in the process of satisfying one another’s need.

My intended goal of design language for my product will provide users the ability to trigger healthy conversations and intimacy through interactive products. Therefore, couples can discover each other’s needs and have a better understanding of one another and learn to built trust, compromise, care, love and perspective taking.

I’ve conducted the first user testing with random couples in New York City. While couples interact with my first prototype, it was hard for them to understand the purpose of the opening in the back of the hoodie until I told them what it was and its design language. Once I told them they’ve actually enjoyed it more and tried out different ways of wearing the garment and interact with one another. There were quite a few problems that I need to resolve after digested the feedbacks from users. First the material should be somehow more firm and stronger instead of silky soft so it can offer a steady appeal and durable (look for more materials). Second, instead of having pocket slots, what if underneath the hoodie was woven with elastic bands and the hoodie would be able to open up for couples while the woven is stretched? Third, what if the height differences between couples was a large stretch from one another? Fifth, what if couples were oversized? Sixth, some suggested that I could look into new ways of spreading and stretching the hoodie instead of overlapping and waste materials and also manufacturing time. Positive feedbacks were also helpful, many said the fact that we (couples) are under one hoodie and we share basically everything, a sign of compromise. The allowance of space of the hoodie gives the couples to pull in and out from the relationship when one’s need the space but eventually the love will come back around and yet stronger. My next step is to c...

These 3 products I’ve designed could be used anywhere at any time.

1.I’m going to design a series of garments where half of garment will open up for 2 users to use. And also there will be open slots for users satisfaction on how they would like to interact with the product and their love ones.

2.a simple idea that I’ve discovered when you hold the post-it note pads and gently glide or flip through the pages against the any surfaces of your body, strangely enough you could feel someone is actually touching you. A user can experience the full stimulation when the post-its have grooves in them. Such as a hand shaped post-its?

3.The newly designed of the “2 in 1 bag of chips.”

My mission is to provide couples with interactive designs that act to resolve the various obstacles of courtship and help themselves preserve and grow as individuals.

Through research, men and women speak a different language, they cope stress differently. The most common issues within a relationship is the lack of trust for one another and that leads to lack of understanding of each other’s behaviors and the usage of misleading communication. I also want to stress the importance of preserving self-identity in a relationship, often men and women will sacrifice to make their mate happy without knowing they are losing themselves in a way that their self-identity have been missing.

My intended goal of design language for my product will provide users the ability to trigger healthy conversations and interactions through interactive products. And that way couples can discover each other’s needs and have a better understanding of one another and learn to accept differences and respect each other’s self-identity.

1.who will be the users for your 1st test?

The users would be singles, couples, students, teachers, whomever I encounter with.

    a. What criteria will you use to select the individuals who will test your prototype? Probably a controlled group selected by either the NFP or myself and hopefully a different group for all 3 tests, that way I can get different ideas and feed backs as well.

b.What type of environment will you test them in? An environment in a counse...
