  • take another look at the anatomy of a thesis document


    In response to Design brief, posted by shinwoo Her,
    in the thread Design brief

    Shinwoo, this is interesting, but please now go back and look at the Anatomy of a Thesis outline below. You need to be thinking about all of these items as you write your Design Brief. You need to be thinking about all of these things now. This one page version should be a summary of the eventual document that you will complete by the end of the Fall semester. steven

    1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (Fall/Spring): one page abstract describing your thesis – the short story

    2. BACKGROUND (Fall) a. Design Mission/Approach – what is YOUR point of view? (September) b. NFP: Mission + Stakeholders (September/October…) i. Which NFP’s have a mission that tackles the issues you would like to address? ii. Where is there overlap with your own mission? iii. How will you contact + interact with your NFP? iv. What design opportunities are provided by your NFP’s inititatives? v. Who are the stakeholders in your design process? c. Greater Issues – how is society potentially impacted by this project? (Sept/Oct)

    3. DESIGN RESEARCH (Fall…) a. Review of existing literature + Quantitative data on problem (Sept/Oct) b. Interviews + Qualitative data gathering (Oct…) c. Observations (Field research) (Oct…) d. Participatory Exercises (Field research) (Oct…)

    4. DESIGN PRECEDENT (Sept/Oct): designers + projects/products that provide models and inspiration

    5. PROBLEMS/OPPORTUNITIES (Sept/Oct): what did your design research reveal? a. Mapping exercises (Mapping Design Criteria, Chain of Influences, Matrix)

    6. STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT + USER SCENARIOS (Oct/Nov…) a. Map existing + potential relationships of your stakeholders and how your thesis idea/product connects them b. Design of Charrette + Planning with NFP c. Analysis of findings

    7. DESIGN CRITERIA (Oct/Nov)

    8. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT (Sept…): include summaries + evaluations of concepts at various stages


    10. PROTOTYPE TESTING (Spring) a. Design of testing scenario + Planning with appropriate users (NFP + others) b. Analysis of findings c. Design refinements + Re-testing

    11. COST ANALYSIS (Materials 4 + Spring)

    12. INTENDED MANUFACTURE + DISTRIBUTION (Materials 4 + Spring)

    13. NEXT STEPS: what potential does this project have to move forward? (December + April)

    14. BIBLIOGRAPHY (September…)
