I have been working closely with a nonprofit organization named GRASP and the former executive director, Michael John Carley. He had introduced me an adult support group and a teenager’s support group within the organization. However, due to the high sensitivity of teenagers with Aspergers Syndrome, it seems hard to conduct a user testing directly on them. Therefore, my first prototype user testing will be conducted on teachers of Aspergers Syndrome. The teachers are the ones who teach them to learn their emotions, facial expressions and who understand the best about their circumstances and reactions at school. Also, they will know what is good or bad, and what is efficient or not for the students with Asergers Syndrome.

The user testing will be focused on how this designed system can be used efficiently, how much it is helpful to the students, and how easier for teachers, students, and parents to use. The current special education teachers will first view and examine the designed program and compare with a current system. They will give feedbacks. Within two weeks, I’m planning to finalize the design and programming and then run the first prototype user testing on teachers of AS students.

  • Products in the market for teenagers

Children toys and teenager toys are similar but also different in many ways. Both products try to attract their users and target on what they are interested in and they need. Even my target is specified as teenagers with Aspergers sydnrome. I looked upon general teenager's products since these teenagers with AS are not so different from those without AS. The only difference is that the teenagers with AS have difficulties in social relationships. Products for teenagers mostly have an educational purpose within itself. Also, lots of technology is involved; it is such a high-tech product. These toys/products increase the creativity of teenagers in all areas.

The mid-year review presentation was very helpful because of the great, healthy comments from the critics. As I was doing presentation, I felt, because Aspergers Syndrome is not very well-known, little overwhelming by explaining it. I receive comments from various critics that the project’s essential concept of using flat TV screen is not so convincing, only if it has detailed mock-ups, healthy statement but like to see in clearer diagram format in presenting researches, more experiments are required, really difficult and extremely complex topic that can be resolved by video device and suggest research on investigates vision and physiological responses to social interaction, the origin of this syndrome needs to be addressed in a manner beyond visual observation and simulation techniques, research the most effective ways to engage social interaction and try to incorporate into the product, and to look at Maya Lin’s Vietnam memorial, Microsoft smart technology. Also, they suggest to look at what’s out there for entertainment technology, have a backup research on why mirror is best material to teach facial expression, and find any therapies using mirror. My next step is to do more research, and develop an idea which answers all the questions.

Before conducting this analysis on my stakeholder’s need, I thought only social interaction is the important part in designing a product for teenagers with Aspergers syndrome. Also, I only tried to focus on teenagers with Aspergers syndrome as my target audience but because all of parents, NFP, school, teachers can be my users, I learned to look at things from other perspectives. In order to help teenagers with Aspergers syndrome, they need supports from all around them. Through this, I once again thought about product being low cost but have all the features and functions that able them to develop their social skills. Safety and simple design is also help to teenagers with Aspergers to focus on the product without any confusion and hesitation.

  • design brief

    Community, Industrial Design

Mission: to improve the lives of teenagers with Asperger's syndrome, so that they can improve their sociability and adaptability within the society.

NFP: GRASP: the global and regional aspergers syndrome partnership.

Location/Context: For global uses; anywhere teenagers with aspergers syndrome live.

Target: My target market is the community for aspergers syndrome. This syndrome is less recognized and also, there are only small products exists.

    Age Group: teenagers

Cost/Marketing Technique: it is not yet specified. I’m looking forward to find out the cost and marketing technique as I go forward with my project.

Evaluation/Prototype Testing: I think I would get evaluation though my NFP..

Materials: I’ve been thinking about making it out of cheap material so the whole costs would be low. However, using current technology is also important since it’s out there. I’m trying to look broad on material to find perfect material for my project
