In order to discuss what I would like to improve about myself, and what I am deeply passionate about, I first must tell you what I believe in. I chose to study product design at Parsons the New School for Design because of senior thesis. Because, I really believe in “A Good Life” for most if not all people. If you asked me what I wanted to do when I was young, and if you ask me now, it’s the same answer: “I want to save the world.” Every day when I analyze our capitalist driven society, I find it hard to believe that people make decisions based on profit, and do not responsibly consider how they will effect their fellow human beings. I am a product designer because I do not accept that responsible products cannot be profitable. I feel that it is my job and my duty to design things that not only raise awareness for the need of a better life, but raise the quality of life for all people. After three years at Parsons, I’ve come to notice a pattern in all of my projects. Besides always trying to raise the bar and push my ideas further, I have always had a hard time making decisions on a timely basis. I think all designers struggle with this because they want their creations to be the best they could possibly be, and I admit to sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing in this aspect. Its not always because I can’t make decisions, a lot of times it has to do with editing. I can generate millions and millions of great ideas, but I can’t always sort through them and present them in a comprehensible way. Whether it be through graphics, and presenting through language, I have a hard time collecting my thoughts and explaining them so that other people understand my vision. I get very excited and revved up about my ideas and I hope this energy translates to those people for which I am presenting, but I understand it is just as important to sell my idea to them in an organized fashion. Most of the time I need to remember to slow down, but that doesn’t mean I won’t capture people with my energy and get them excited for the limitless possibilities of how this world can change for the better. In terms of subject matters I am interested in, after careful consideration of a collection of things, I think my biggest interest is energy. Whether it be biofuel, energy from the sun, or the negative impacts of fossil fuel energy, I am constantly looking for ways to improve the lives of people through the energy they consume. I am interested in energy related to Urban Agriculture; I want to feed people in a sustainable way. I am interested in Mayor Bloomberg’s bill that was recently passed to put wind turbines on the roofs of New York City buildings to produce energy. I am also interested in Valcent Technology’s recent production of Algae as an alternative source of biofuel. Being a raw foodist I am interested in the life cycle of harvesting energy for our own bodies from live plants which derive energy from sun. I think raw foodism is a growing trend as a lifestyle and I hope to provide products that make living this way easier. I am greatly interested in solar panels and all the great opportunities they provide if they were only improved upon. Another incident which really moved me happened to one of my close friends. This past Christmas day, a drunk driver who was also using narcotics, hit and killed her father, mother, and grandmother instantly. Holidays are such happy times for people, yet for many they are the victims of crashes like these. I find it outraging that people can still drive under the influence and I do not believe that police checkpoints are the answer to solving this problem. As we do know this past summer, a New York police officer was hit and killed by a drunk driver, while pulling over a different drunk driver for being under the influence. Instead of raising awareness I would like to come up with a product that physically prevents anyone to drive while intoxicated. I have a lot of general interests and I hope to narrow these down to make a product. My goal for this year is to make a physical product which can be bought, sold, and used by other people. I would like it to be beautiful in form yet be a product that serves its function.
