  • Users for first test?

My target is the local elderly people. I am going to have a meeting with NFP to decide specific place.

What criteria will you use to select the individuals who will test your prototype?

This is very important point for my user testing. There are two kinds of people in the criteria. One is elderly, and the other is care worker. The users must be both two people who need care and care worker together, so that I can test if my prototypes can realize their collaboration. This is the first step.

What type of environment will you test them in?

I would like to test in senior center in NYC. There are both people who need care and care workers. For recording this user testing, I would like to take pictures or video which is for interview with them and recording their collaboration.

What type of relationship do you need with your NFP and users to conduct your test?

Now I am contacting with my NFP to achieve this user testing. I have to prepare for user testing, and there are necessary items to do that such as several prototypes, camera, note, and book which is instruction but very nice looking. Also I have to ask my NFP if there is limitation for recording user testing.

  • I have done testing with several types of weaving, knitting, and weaving techniques.

Here is first one of them, and I will upload more later...

I found some good knitting stores in Manhattan and where is very close to our place. One is Purl where is at 137 Sullivan Street, and the other is Knit New York where is at 307 E 14th Street. I keep researching other knitting and weaving method which can be done by either one or more.

Here is some example that I took recently.

  • NFP Work

Current status of NFP working is going on well, and I and NFP group keep contacting each other. Now Leonila Vega who is executive director in Direct Care Alliance in NYC helps me to prepare user testing.

To achieve better user testing, there is the list what I have to prepare as soon as possible below.

    • Certain types of prototyping, which are able to be used by users
    • Recordable items such as a camera, note, video (if it's possible)
    • Book, which is not a booklet, it is a book so that I can give users as a gift
    • Schedule

After preparing those items, I will contact her as soon as possible. Also, I will have an appointment with her to get more information and prepare the user testing.

  • Quilting_20bee_1__177_

The presentation in mid-term review cleared up the direction of my next stage.

The list of keywords is below.

    • User testing

    • Benefit of client

    • Ability level of the target

    • The location of activity (which space, area? Level of height? Precisely…)

    • Motivation (How they want to do this activity?)

    • Participatory

There is one issue in my project which stands out in relief that the weakness of approach from client’s side. Most of keywords from critics are about consideration for clients and their motivation of the activity. All feedbacks reshape the proposal to next stage.

There is also more concrete example which relates my project in terms of the client’s motivation. One is quilting bee. This is participatory knitting process, and which requires several people (more than two or three). The point is people have a conversation while they are knitting, and also they can rotate the area where they knit so that they can collaborate and share the idea of patterns.

The second example is about NFP which is called Fiber Zero Association. They are promoting artistic participatory activity. Any people can join this activity and they can make something with fibers together. The point is the targets, even blind, deaf, and any other handicap people can join this activity to have a fun. To achieve this, the NFP is approaching how those people can join and have a fun with it. The method is close to knitting but totally freedom. They can do anything with fibe...
