  • When you put yourself in a doctor’s care, you hope that they will cure you and help you recover from your ailments. Unfortunately, all too often doctors cause harm in the course of treatment. Doctors are only human, and they are susceptible to mistakes, but the amount of medical errors in the U.S. is quite astounding.

    A study by the Institute of Medicine found that around 98,000 people die every year from preventable medical errors. This is a staggering amount when you consider that it doesn’t even account for the amount of people who are permanently harmed, let alone those who suffer temporarily from preventable medical errors. Deaths from medical mistake are one of the top ten causes of death in the United States, many of which are unfortunately preventable.

    When you or a family member experience permanent harm because of a preventable medical error, you are far from alone. The national perception of how common these deaths are is greatly skewed. While Americans estimated on average that around 5,000 people a year die from preventable errors, we know from the study above that the number is 20 times that. As far as injuries, some of the most common preventable mistakes include:

    The performance of procedures on the wrong side of the body
    The performance of procedures in the wrong site on the body
    The performance of the incorrect procedure on the patient
