    Using fast pyrolysis—gasification’s cooler, oxygenless cousin—to economically produce a bio-oil that serves as a replacement for alternative fuel oil has been a challenging endeavor. Despite its unusual properties and typically high capital and operating expenditures, however, there is increased interest around bio-oil production and utilization, and researchers and companies are achieving success in solving commercialization barriers.

    One of those companies is Metso, whose technology partner, VTTTechnical Research Centre of Finland, has been working on bio-oil since 1982. Jussi Mantyniemi, general manager of technology for Metso’s power business line, says the patented, integrated bio-oil production process has three main parts, the first of which is fuel handling. This includes fuel receiving, drying of the biomass to 10 percent moisture, crushing and conveying.

    Prepared fuel then enters a fluidized pyrolysis reactor where the dried biomass is pyrolysed in oxygen-free conditions. “The heat for the reaction is provided by the hot sand from the host boiler,” Mantyniemi explains. “After the reactor, in the cyclones, vapors are separated from the sand and char, which are returned to the boiler.” Vapors from the reactor are condensed to form bio-oil, and noncondensable gases are introduced to the boiler for heat and power generation.

    Two indie music acts, Mild and Sqweez Animal, are ready to lead 100 Thai cyclists on a bicycle route to explore six major venues in Bangkok this Sunday afternoon before throwing them a free concert in the evening.

    The event is part of the "Pedal Around Thailand: Cycling Together, Hearts Together" campaign organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to encourage Thais and tourists to help reduce their carbon footprint by opting to travel by bike.

    As the campaign's ambassadors, the sextet Mild and the duo Sqweez Animal will lead a caravan of 100 cyclists on a route titled "Chill Out Bangkok Sightseeing" to visit Wat Amarintraram, Siriraj Hospital,the naval dockyard, Wat Arun Ratchawararam (or the Temple of Dawn), Santa Cruz church and Museum Siam.

    Those interested are invited to bring their own bikes and join the journey, which will start at Museum Siam on Sanam Chai Road on Sunday at 2pm. All cyclists are expected to get back to the museum late in the afternoon, where the concert will start at 5pm.

    The two acts will perform chart-topping and specially selected songs, and non-cycling fans are also invited. The evening will also feature activities including game booths with prizes worth 250,000 baht.

    A new report indicates that a class of pesticides linked to the deaths of bees may be harming other wildlife species.

    Neonicotinoids have now been banned by the European Union because of concerns over bee health.

    But this latest review of the scientific data suggests the chemicals pose a risk to soil, water and grain-eating birds such as partridge.

    Prof Dave Goulson of Sussex University has published his assessment in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

    "It seems to me that we may have been focussing far too much on bees and have missed the bigger picture," he told BBC News.

    Neonicotinoids are systemic poisons. They are usually applied as coatings to seeds and as the plant grows, every part of it becomes toxic to insects and other pests.

    Introduced in the mid 1990s, the chemicals, which include imidacloprid, were taken up widely in agriculture and are now the world's most prominent group of pesticides.

    But although they were heralded as having less of an impact on the environment when they were first developed, concerns have been growing for several years about their impact on bees.
