Ramadhan fasting month which started last Wednesday will not affect the general economic activity, including tourism. It will continue to run as usual in Bali even whil the Ramadhan fasting month is ongoing.

Denpasar Tourist Agency head Putu Budiasa told The Jakarta Post that in general, tourism in Bali had remained normal.

Everything is business as usual from street-side food stalls to five-star hotels as well as nightlife venues will continue to host customers per normal operating hours.

“All activities will run as usual. Nothing changes. The only thing that will change, maybe, is when customers stop by. Those who are fasting may go to restaurants when it’s time to break fast,” he said.

He, nevertheless, acknowledged that domestic tourist arrivals might see a slight lessening during the fasting month. During the summer school holiday, from year to year, Bali regularly sees peak domestic visitor arrivals and mostly from Java.

“As most residents in Java are Muslim, many may opt to not to travel during the fasting month. But domestic visitors from other parts of Indonesia are still coming,” he said.

Meanwhile, July to August are the peak months for foreign tourist arrivals. Bali tourism agency head Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu similarly said that there were no operational hour limitations during Ramadhan this year. “Such limits is the authority of each regency and city. As far as I know, operational hours and services at the airport, hotels, restaurants and touris...

  • Japan tests 4K television streams over the internet

A Japanese telecoms company is carrying out tests to try to prove 4K-resolution video can be streamed over the internet to television set-top boxes. NTT West is hosting the trial - which runs until Friday - and says it believes it is the first of its kind. A new video compression standard is being used to reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted. 4K broadcasts offer four times the amount of detail as 1080p high-definition content. Compressing technologies allow broadcasters to transmit material using much less data than would otherwise be required while minimising the loss of picture quality. With regard to video, instead of sending data describing each pixel of each frame as if it were a standalone entity, a variety of algorithms are used to analyse how colour is distributed across each image and what changes occur between each frame. This is then used to allow redundant information to be discarded, providing instead only the information needed to reconstruct a sequence based on an understanding of how each pixel and frame are related to each other. At present the H.264/MPEG-4 codec is commonly used to broadcast digital TV - including the UK's Freeview HD and Sky HD satellite services - as well as the vast majority of video clips on the web. In January the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency, approved a new format to succeed it called the H.265 High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. It allows 4K and 1080p videos to be streamed using ...

I've always dreamed of becoming successful by creating characters for books, games, and movies. I moved from Perú to the U.S. and, to pay the bills, I worked for Apple, Adobe, and other technology companies. But (as told in Part 1 and Part 2 of my story) I decided to leave my life in Silicon Valley to return to Perú and focus on my dreams.

I've tried many things to be successful, but none have worked out. They say the road to success is long and hard... and boy, I made sure to hit every pothole along the way.

I was around 30 years old and I needed to come up with a new plan to achieve success. That's when I decided I was going to be: a Toy Inventor!

I had recently written a children's book about shape-shifting characters named the Blobbies, so I decided to invent a toy that transformed, just like them.

I went to RadioShack looking for parts that I could use for my new toy. Then I went to Toys"R"Us and bought toys to open them up and get their parts. One by one, I dismembered the bodies of countless Barbies, Barneys, and Elmos. I shed a tear as I dismembered my beloved quack-quack electronic Ducky. My living room looked like the aftermath of a Sesame Street gang war.

Unfortunately, to create the kind of toy I wanted, I required complex pieces and tools I didn't have. Ducky had lost its life in vain.

I researched on the internet and found out about resin casting and latex rubber. I went to Michael's Arts & Crafts and I got all the supplies. I was able to c...
