Inspecting the banks, then and now – the Wall Street bailout five years later

Christy Romero: 'These bankers lied, pure and simple'

Yes, the financial system has stabilized, in part due to the Tarp bailout, but are we rid of the toxic corporate culture that led to the financial crisis? Not sufficiently.

Excessive executive pay is still far too routine, in spite of corporate scandals and continued losses. The root cause of the financial crisis was a pervasive culture of rampant risk-taking and greed, combined with unchecked power.

This destructive culture existed not only in the largest financial companies on Wall Street, but also in banks outside of Wall Street.

At SIGTARP, we have arrested and continue to arrest bankers who cultivated a culture of reckless arrogance, believing they were untouchable even as they broke the law.

When their risky gambling went south these bankers lied, plain and simple. They hid bad loans and bad balance sheets through illegal accounting trickery. Some sought taxpayer dollars to fill in the holes on the fraud-riddled books. Some criminally concealed that the bank itself was funding their luxury lifestyles, believing they were entitled to the best even while they foreclosed on homeowners.

Regulators can change the rules of the road, but there will be those who specialize in loopholes, workarounds and criminal deception. At SIGTARP, we will continue to change corrupt culture the way we do it best, by putting as many rotten apples in jail...

I have been interested in biometrics since 1996 when a little company called Comparitor Systems became one of the first infamous internet era penny stock scams. The New York Times detailed how: "In early May (1996), Comparator became one of the most amazing stock stories on the Nasdaq market, leaping from 3 cents a share to a peak of $1.75...the company had not developed a new fingerprint identification system, as it had said, but had instead stolen a prototype of a system developed by others..."

Comparitor may have been a scam but this was my first exposure to biometrics technology (and how something can go viral over the internet). The technology seemed promising and I believed that it would ultimately replace passwords.

I didn't think it would take 17 years but it does look like our standard alphanumeric password protection standard may finally become obsolete.

Earlier this year we saw headlines such as ArsTechnica's "PayPal exec aims to "obliterate passwords from the face of the planet" and the BBC's "End of the line for online passwords, says PayPal" where PayPal President David Marcus stated that "We want to move away from passwords, and get to embedded fingerprint scanners on mobile phones." Moreover, he correctly predicted that: "You're going to start seeing that type of experience later this year, with a mass roll-out in the year to come."

After Apple's acquisition of Authentic last year which included its ...

Fashion Forward Trousers: Take Your Cue

    Source

For a long time in fashion, womanhood was associated with "no pants." Women were always seen in gowns, long and full skirts and maxi dresses that enhanced the female silhouette in the most appealing way. Coco Chanel, who took women's fashion a notch ahead with wearable, real-world wardrobe in the last century, famously said, "I make fashions women can live in, breathe in, feel comfortable in and look younger in."

Pants arrived. Pants arrived and changed the way women dressed and continued to do so with unending stylish new variants every day. They became an absolute necessity even with the stay-at-home moms. It's this unmatched popularity of trousers that led the makers to bring the ultra cool denims into our world. And there's been no looking back ever since.

It's the age of fashion hybrid. Where style was concerned, the easiest way to make something seem fresh was to coin a flashy, cool-sounding term for it (often combining two existing ones). When I first heard the word "jeggings" (jeans + leggings), I thought it was the most outrageous fashion term ever. The only image that my mind could give me was crushed bottoms! But look what a raging trend it's become. Laugh all you want, but you might even live to witness a day when pooches would wander with a pair on! Oh yes!

There's more! Skorts, coatigangs, glamping and the likes. But seriously, pants are big in the world of fashion. And they are n...

  • The Investment Dresser: Espadrilles

Apparently, André Leon Talley, the voluminous contributing editor of American Vogue, and Diana Vreeland, the pin-thin former über editor-in-chief of American Vogue, once discussed espadrilles for three hours.

One probably needed to be there.

Even if you went into the darkest corners of the espadrille's socio- and geopolitical origins, that still leaves a lot of time for jute. And while there are many good things to say about jute - it's natural and biodegradable, for starters - I have my reservations.

SHOP: The Trendy 20 - flat espadrilles

Such as how jute beats up the soles of your feet. But maybe I'm being a bit Princess and the Pea here. Chic-erati of all sizes love an espadrille, from Picasso on. I wonder about their calluses but maybe, after a while, the espadrille functions like a loofah.

The problem for those of us with only two weeks' access to a hot beach rather than three months' cruising around the Med, is that our feet don't have time to acclimatise to all that rubbing.

Perhaps we should wear them in town more. The espadrille is a classic. It began life in northern Spain, gained traction with fishermen, looks terrific with floppy trousers and even more so with a long evening dress.

That said, the espadrille isn't the most flattering shoe since it moulds accommodatingly around every defect, whether your feet are pronate or buniony.

That's why they're so comfortable and why I'd opt for as thick a sole as possible. (Keep clothes long if your ankles aren't y...

Newport International Group: From obscurity, Manning became a polarizing symbol

    http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2013/08/01/world/from-obscurity-manning-became-a-polarizing-symbol/#.UfvlFNK1G9F

NEW, YORK – The honors and accolades proliferated over three years: international peace prizes, solidarity campaigns by celebrities, an effort to designate him — in absentia, of course — as grand marshal of San Francisco’s gay pride parade.

All the while, Bradley Manning was imprisoned by the military, branded a traitor by the U.S. government and reviled by many Americans.

Some called for his execution for giving troves of classified secrets to WikiLeaks for global distribution.

Few Americans in living memory have emerged from obscurity to become such polarizing public figures — admired by many around the world, fiercely denigrated by many in his homeland. The contrasting portraits of Manning were summarized by his defense attorney, David Coombs, during the court-martial that culminated Tuesday with Manning’s acquittal on a charge of aiding the enemy and his conviction on charges of espionage, theft and computer fraud. “Is Pfc. Manning somebody who is a traitor, who has no loyalty to this country, or the flag?” Coombs had asked.

“Or is he a young, naive, good-intentioned soldier who had human life, in his humanist beliefs, center to his decision?

“Which side of the version is the truth?”

His supporters embraced the second of those versions, as illustrated ...

newport international group post code 34935207158, 2 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' stars indicted on federal bank, bankruptcy fraud charges

    Source

Two stars of the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" were indicted Monday on federal fraud charges, accused of exaggerating their income while applying for loans before their TV show debuted in 2009, then hiding their improving fortunes in a bankruptcy filing after their first season aired.

Teresa Giudice, 41, and her husband Giuseppe "Joe" Giudice, 43, of Montville Township, were charged in a 39-count indictment with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications and bankruptcy fraud.

The couple submitted fraudulent mortgage and other loan applications from 2001 through 2008, a year before their show debuted on Bravo, making phony claims about their employment status and salaries, the indictment said.

Prosecutors allege the Giudices received about $4.6 million in mortgages, withdrawals from home equity lines of credit and construction loans. In some instances the couple filed fake W-2s and tax returns.

Joe Giudice also failed to file tax returns for the years 2004 through 2008, when he is alleged to have earned nearly $1 million, the government said. During that time his income allegedly fluctuated wildly; the indictment states he made $323,481 in 2005 and $26,194 in 2006.

The reality TV stars were scheduled to make their initial court appearances Tuesday...

MADRID – Fashion models that emerge from clothing labels and inform customers about an article’s fabric, vehicles in a print ad that drive around and open their doors, characters in a book that smile at the reader: all of this is already possible with Google Glass, which could hit the market in 2014.

Murcia, Spain-based Droiders, the company behind the application that enabled the first live streaming of a surgery using Google Glass and performed by a Spanish physician, Dr. Pedro Guillen, has announced the development of Empowar, the world’s first augmented-reality application for the hi-tech headset.

One of the individuals responsible for this application, Ignacio Navarro, told EFEfuturo that the inclusion of this software in the Google Glass device provides access to a broad range of functionalities that will make a three-dimensional reality available to any user.

The application is ideal for visualizing images in three dimensions and interacting with them in various fields, including art, education, advertising, marketing and commerce, Navarro said.

He added that Empowar already is showing that it can be used successfully, for example allowing students to view images from their textbooks in motion and in three dimensions.

It also allows users to walk visually through a natural park and enjoy its flora and fauna from different angles of vision, as well as enable people to view videos or images of singers while listening to their mu...
