    Recenlty you saw on our Facebook page some important clean energy news. MidAmerican Energy Company announced plans to invest $1.9 billion in wind energy projects in Iowa. The power company plans to install 656 wind turbines throughout the state, adding 1,050 megawatts of wind generation.

    This clean energy investment will:

    Create jobs: Create 460 construction jobs over two years and 48 permanent jobs.

    Save money: Is expected to cut consumer rates by $3.3 million in 2015, growing to $10 million annually by 2017.

    Benefit farmers and the state: Landowners that allow turbines on their land will be paid $3.2 million annually and the state is expected to generate more than $360 million in additional property tax revenues over the next 30 years.

    Attract businesses: Facebook recently chose to locate a new data center in Iowa, in part because the company wants to meet its goal of getting 25% of its power from clean sources.

    It's no wonder that clean energy enjoys such strong support when projects like this are creating jobs, attracting investment, saving consumers money and reducing pollution. More than 70% of Americans support expanding wind power and a whopping 85% of Iowans see wind energy as a positive for the state.

    6th EHPA Forum discusses heat pump labelling: consumers willing to pay for better environmental ratings

    Around 150 participants gathered on 15 May 2013 in Brussels, Belgium for the 6th EHPA (European Heat Pump Forum). In addition to presentations on the role of heat pumps in balancing energy demand and a debate about their continued existence without f-gases, Antonia Dickmanlooked at heat pumps from the consumer perspective asking “How interested are consumers in renewable heat and what impact can energy labelling have?”

    Although heat pumps are currently a niche technology in many EU countries, they are expected to form a necessary part of Europe’s low carbon future. Renewable heat policies alone however, will not be able to shift heat pumps to the mainstream. At the EHPA (European Heat Pump Forum) Forum held earlier this month, Antonia Dickman looked at the impact of energy labelling on consumer purchases, and whether these could be used to help influence the heat pump uptake.

    To answer the question, “could labelling help consumers make more informed choices?” Antonia Dickman’s presentation looked at two key studies:

    People don’t like being forced to purchase things they may not want, which is why over half of us are hoping that the Supreme Court throws out the individual insurance mandate in President Barack Obama’s health care plan.

    There’s also a worldwide rebellion brewing against being forced to purchase expensive electricity produced by so-called “renewable” sources, now being exacerbated by the availability of very cheap natural gas from shale formations.

    But, here in the U.S. there are some 30 different statewide “renewable portfolio standards” (RPSs) that also mandate pricey power, usually under the guise of fighting dreaded global warming.

    RPSs command that a certain percentage of electricity has to come from wind, solar, geothermal, or biomass. Given that this power generally costs a lot more than what comes from a modern coal or gas plant, your local utility passes the cost on in the form of higher bills, which the various state utility commissions are only too happy to approve in the name of saving the planet.

    RPSs generally do not include hydroelectric power, which produces no carbon dioxide. It’s also much more predictable than solar or wind, and costs about the same as the average for gas and coal combined.     What Technology is Helping Businesses to Improve Energy Savings?

    Energy efficiency needs to be a priority for all businesses. This can have benefits for the environment and the running costs of a business. However, it is an area which requires continual review and action. It often begins with the little things; from carrying out an energy walk-round and identifying wasteful energy usage, to ensuring heaters and boilers are regularly serviced.     Container company Pentalver has created a new solution to the problem of where to house a new wood pellet store using its ISO containers.

    With a ready supply of new or pre-used containers, storage facilities, skilled container conversion personnel and on-site electrics and plumbing, Pentalver says it is able to rework shipping containers to create a separate boiler house and fuel store, with an internal capacity of 33.2 m³.

    It adds that the benefits of using shipping containers include their strong structure and weight bearing capacity which makes them ideal for housing heavy boiler equipment. There is also no need for additional foundations or a base as containers can be landed directly on to the ground.

    Other benefits of the container boiler room are said to include: portability, ease of installation (it simply needs to sit on a concrete plinth) and a low cost alternative to an expensive permanent structure.

    Sam Baggley, group container sales manager at Pentalver, said: “With the government committed to meeting 15 percent of the UK’s energy demand from renewable sources by 2020 and financial assistance available through the Renewable Heat Incentive, biomass installations are on the increase. “Our converted containers provide a cost-efficient method of creating a totally bespoke boiler room that can be located in close proximity to residential or commercial properties.”...

  • Residents living on the most eco-friendly social housing development in the UK are reporting massive reductions in energy bills.

    Sinclair Meadows was launched six months ago and already, the average costs have been cut by seventy five per cent. Fiona Trott visited the complex in South Shields to find out how they do it.

    One of the first things you notice at Sinclair Meadows is the smell. It's a light woody smell coming from the timber clad homes which are facing the sun. The solar panels are also soaking it up and along with a boiler that runs on recycled wood pellets, these twenty one properties have all the energy they need.

    Inside, the toilets use rainwater and there are vents which take in a room's heat and re-distribute it around the home.

    But it's not just science which is apparently making this social scheme work, it's the attitude of the people who live here too. Their behaviour is even being monitored by Northumbria University. It's a living human experiment.

    At one of the ground floor flats, Dot and Brian Wilson are out gardening. They're the couple on the complex with the green fingers and were chosen from five hundred applicants because of their environmental awareness.     The first house in the world to supply its own energy with unique “bioskin” through the cultivation of micro-algae is being presented at the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg in Germany.

    As a part of the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg, the Bio Intelligent Quotient (BIQ) House is the world’s first building to have a bioreactor façade. The façade of the five-story BIQ House comprises a vertical algae farm with an integrated bioreactor, turning the building into a Plus Energy House. This weekend, the house became fully operational as the glass façade was filled with liquid biomass. From now on, microalgae will be cultivated in 129 transparent glass panels, individually measuring 2.5 x 0.7 meters, which make up its “bioskin.” While these panels are used to produce energy, they also regulate light and provide shade. The combination of energy-saving algae and geothermal and solar energy will generate more energy than the residents of the house will consume.

    ROANOKE, VA. - Norfolk Southern's office building at 110 Franklin Road SE in Roanoke has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) ENERGY STAR certification, which signifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

    "Norfolk Southern is pleased to accept EPA's ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts," said Andy Paul, manager energy services. "This demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs. ENERGY STAR is a great tool to compare our building performance with our peers. This inspired us to do what we can to achieve the triple bottom line -- planet, people, and profit. We are proud of this accomplishment and excited about similar work across our network."

    Commercial buildings that earn EPA's ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Norfolk Southern improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across its entire 22-state system and by making cost-effective improvements to its building.
