Materials for the Arts (MFTA), NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), supports and stimulates the artistic process and community through the creative reuse of materials. Friends of Materials for the Arts is a not for profit that helps to expand and sustain the many projects of the MFTA. Since its creation by the Department of Cultural Affairs in 1978, Materials for the Arts has collected reusable items, distributing them free of charge to not for profit arts organizations, City agencies, public schools and social, health and community service organizations that have arts programs in New York City. For every dollar it costs MFTA to operate, MFTA brokers donations of valuable goods worth almost five dollars. Materials for the Arts is the largest provider of art supplies to the NYC Department of Education.
