Everyone's Closet loans/gives durable medical equipment (i.e. wheelchairs, walkers, and specialized beds) to members of the New York City community who could not otherwise obtain it without experiencing financial hardship. Designed to facilitate a paradigm shift in the way members of society approach the use and ownership of everyday necessities, Everyone's Closet allows individuals to obtain that which they need and cannot afford, discourages wasteful spending, and provides a forum in which members can unite around themes of generosity and community.
Programs
We stock durable medical equipment (DME).
Our equipment is new or gently used. Just as your hospital does not sterilize its wheelchairs between patients, we do not sterilize our equipment between clients. The recipient assumes all risks and responsibilities for the equipment given. Before requesting something in our closet, please make all efforts to obtain the equipment through your private insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.
We generally have the following in stock:
- Power wheelchair (requires a doctor's prescription)
- Manual wheelchair (requires a doctor's prescription)
- Hospital bed (requires a doctor's prescription)
- Shower chair
- Walker
- Grab bar
- Reacher
- Cane
Please e-mail to see what else we have in stock. New products come in all the time. You may also place requests to source equipment not listed above.
News & Events
"Engage, Walk the Walk", by Mauricio Gomez, student of Parsons The New School for Design. This project is currently on view at Felissimo Townhouse and will benefit Everyone's Closet. Contact Mauricio Gomez 917.449.1036. Gomez's fashionable canes bring status and power back to those who rely on one for walking.
History
Everyone's Closet was founded in 2003. It is based on the concept of a gemach. A gemach is a lot like a library, only it loans much more than books: wedding dresses, cutlery, winter coats, money at no interest, or medical equipment. When borrowers are through using the items, they return them. At a later time in life, the borrower may even make a donation to the gemach. Gemachs are tradionally for small, tight-knit communties. Everyone's Closet is a novel idea in that it is open to all metro New Yorkers. Its ambition is to improve quality of life by presenting a forum where people can help themselves and each other.
