Design 21: Social Design Network

The Leaders in Software and Art Salon will consist of four short presentations by artists who incorporate media and technology into their work, including multi-media installations, performances, digital imaging, and new media. There will be a short reception at 6 pm, followed by an hour of presentations at 7 pm. For those who would like to further discuss the presentations there will be an informal gathering at a venue nearby the museum. A donation is suggested.

The presenters include:

• Ursula Endlicher's work resides on the intersection of Internet, performance and multi-media installation. Her focus lies in analyzing the social and structural components of the Web while translating its hidden architectures and languages - such as HTML - into choreography for performances, into layouts for visualizations, installations or objects, or into notation for music. http://www.ursenal.net/

• Daniel Beunza obtained his Ph.D. from New York University and taught in Barcelona and at Columbia Business School in New York City before joining the London School of Economics as a lecturer in management. His work examines the ways in which social relations and technology shape value within Wall Street. As part of the 3-man collaborative Derivart, he examines concepts like floating, trading, rising, or crashing, and investigates variables like correlation, volatility, or liquidity. http://derivart.info

The Project Room for New Media at Chelsea Art Museum, Home of the Miotte Foundation, is pleased to announce an exhibition of experimental geography created by Jack Toolin/C5. Perfect View is part of the C5 Landscape Initiative, a suite of four projects that address the perception of landscape in light of GPS technology. The exhibition will feature six large-scale triptychs, video documentation, expedition artifacts, and the interactive C5 GPS Media Player.

Perfect View exposes sublime landscapes across the United States creating connections between diverse geographical regions and cultures through the use of new media technology, known as ‘geocaching’.

Jack Toolin is an artist whose work spans multiple forms of new media. He has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2002 Whitney Biennial); San Francisco Camerawork; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Foxy Production, New York City. He is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute and an adjunct professor at the Polytechnic Institute at NYU.

Michael Mao Dance is headed to the Edinburgh Festival but before they jet off to Scotland, the company will make its "Bon Voyage" appearance. The program features the three dances that will be presented at the festival. The program opens with the very popular Weaving, a tour de force of improbable physicality to hypnotic Kodo drumming performed with high octane vigor. Next will be Lorca Libre, choreographed to verses by the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca shortly before his 10 month sojourn in NYC and immediately after, while he was in Havana Cuba. Lorca by this period was already steeped in Gypsy lore. Concluding the first part of the evening will be China Moves - Phase I, a collaboration between Mao and Huang Ruo.

Elga Wimmer & Frère Independent are proud to present the second edition of Open Portfolio at the Chelsea Art Museum. A pool of thirty to forty selected emerging artists from around the globe will share directly with the public their most recent art works. All works will be unique, original, and challenging. Curator Elga Wimmer will lead a selection committee of contemporary art specialists. For three days artists will use a computer and their portfolio to present their work at the museum. At the end of the three days the artists will leave a selection of their works at the museum beginning a month long exhibition resulting from the three day salon and interaction with the public. Producers Elga Wimmer and Thierry Alet introduce here a new and dynamic way of promoting art. Open Portfolio is not just a show, an art fair or a biennial. It is a new format allowing for more proximity between the artists and the public at large.

In honor of the 200th birthday of Robert Schumann, the Argento Chamber Ensemble presents a concert of three perspectives on the composer:

• Franz Liszt, piano transcriptions of two Schumann songs, Liebeslied (Widmung) and Frühlingsnacht, played by pianist Joanna Chao

• György Kurtág, Hommage à R. Sch., featuring clarinetist Carol McGonnell, violist Stephanie Griffin, and pianist Joanna Chao

• Kimmy Szeto, transcription for chamber ensemble of Schumann, Symphony No. 2, Opus 61, featuring the Argento Chamber Ensemble conducted by Michel Galante

The event will take place at the Chelsea Art Museumon Tuesday, June 22, at 7:30 pm. General admission is $15 and students and seniors are $10. CAM members are free.

The Chelsea Music Festival will kick off on Friday June 25th, and run through Sunday June 27th, at the Chelsea Art Museum. This festival will feature a dazzling array of chamber music to celebrate both modernity and heritage. Join internationally renowned musicians and rising stars in premieres of works by living composers and a celebration of the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann’s birth.

Over the course of the weekend, three concerts and one family event will each feature the World- or New York- premiere of a work by a living composer alongside music from the Classical and Romantic periods, particularly Schumann and his contemporaries.

On Wednesday, June 9, 2010, 7PM, the Composers Concordance will partner with the Chelsea Art Museum, 556 W. 22nd St. (11th Ave.) “Performing Arts at CAM,” with a concert showing the relationship between light, laser projection and new music. The visual artist for this show is laser artist Raphaele Shirley and there will be projections of her works during the performance at the museum.

"KID CREOLE AND MY COCONUTS" is a delightful, danceable and very personal documentary memoir chronicling Swiss - born artist/choreographer/designer Adriana Kaegi's adventures as Mama Coconut -- co-founder of the 1980s multicultural tropical funk machine called Kid Creole and the Coconuts and wife to August Darnell the mercurial man behind the glamorous combo.

From jamming in scrappy downtown New York underground dives to performing for American Presidents and Lady Di, Kid Creole and the Coconuts' dazzling success charted the arc of a decade -- and the rise, fall and rise again of the band the New Musical Express (among others) called The Best Live Band in the world.

At the center of it all was the stylish, multi-talented Kaegi with an early video camera, "making reality TV before it even existed!" as she laughs. With a rare intimacy, she documents the band's extraordinary experiences, both global and internal. Propelled by the compulsive rhythms of the Kid Creole and the Coconuts extravaganza, this documentary will leave you singing - "You can take anything, but don't take my Coconuts"!

A Brand New Exhibition on display!

Fourteen Again brings together seven artists who, through More Art, partnered with local schools on a series of collaborative art projects. Each artist conducted tailored workshops with students of Chelsea’s Clinton Middle School and Liberty High School, sharing the nature of their artistic practice while creating original works of art together. These collaborations encompassed a wide range of media, involving students on many different levels. The resulting array of works touched upon the themes of adolescence, examining language, place, and the fleeting reality of meaning. Contributing Artists: Wilfredo Ortega, Justin Berry, Slater Bradley, Nancy Drew, Karen Tam, Tony Oursler and Anthony Goicolea. On view till June 19. More info: www.chelseaartmuseum.org

A laser light and fog installation which mingles the spatial clarity and structure of minimalism with the ephemeral, virtual qualities of new media and technology.This installation both underlines and questions the meaning of space and perception by playing with the physics of light and spacial geometry, creating ever-evolving colored structures as the visitor shifts in his or her viewing angle.
