I think this product; lung ashtray, produced by German insurance company AOK shows intersection. Actually, ashtray is made for smokers and most ashtrays are purchased by smokers. However, this product affects to also non-smokers. It has not only an original function that contains cigarette ash, but also an extra function that gives awareness to smokers and non-smokers.

Identify possible issue/problem areas for your thesis project that you have passion for: ---Smoking

What’s the context/understanding you have about the issue/problem?

---Since cigarette was invented, the popularity of smoking has increased. Many youth, man, woman, or even pregnant woman smoke, and it is able to cause adults disease, lung cancer, harmless of growing, or malformation of the embryo. Moreover, there are so many people in the world who are suffering from second-hand smoke such as children who have smokers in their families. Second-hand smoke is poisonous and has over 4000 chemicals, including 50 that can cause cancer. Breathing second-hand smoke can be more dangerous than inhaling smoke through a cigarette. It has twice as much nicotine and tar as the smoke that people smoking inhale and five times more carbon monoxide, a deadly gas that starves human body of oxygen. Therefore, smoking problem is one of the biggest issues in the world.

A few months ago, one of my friends told me that he didn’t know where he could find a reason that he must stop smoking. He is a heavy smoker and has been smoking for 10 years but he hasn’t even tried to quit smoking because he doesn’t know why it’s harmful. Of course he knew that it is harmful and many people are dying because of smoking. However, he doesn’t think it will be his story because he has never seen it.

This man spent a lot of time collecting chopsticks form the restaurant in the Koriyama City Hall. As a result, the put 7,382 chopsticks together and build a boat that is not only made from recycled materials, but is an eco friendly as well. In this example, people can see that many pieces of scraps can transform into a fascinating and useful object. If we put this idea into a bigger context, recycling will be a big deal for people only in the developed countries but also undeveloped countries. Imaging a bigger boat is built from scraps of wood; how much trees we can save every year. If this idea use to boat manufactures, furniture manufactures and any kind of woodworking related manufactures, there should be a big impact to them. This example shows how important recycling is and how useful it can be.

I would like to collaborate with recycling organizations especially in waste wood.

This rug, made from used blankets, was designed by a Dutch design duo, Tejo Remy and Rene VeenHuizen. I feel that it is an extremely successful product in addressing the issue of finding alternate ways to deal with the waste that each individual contributes to, and also of making people aware of the fact that there is a huge need to be conscious of how one’s habits and actions impact the environment. Not only is the rug extremely beautiful, but it also recycles the used blankets very efficiently. Although not very large, a lot of pieces of the blanket are needed to make the rug; the blankets have been cut and folded into very thin strips that have then been compactly sewn together.

Possible issue/ problem areas for your thesis project that I have passion for ---- Medical care

What's the context/understanding you have about the issue/problem? 1.Literacy and medical care ----- More than one-third of American adults have only basic or below-basic literacy in health matters, Sometimes they can't even read a label to determine if a product is for a head cold or diarrhea, or administer a proper dose to oneself or a child. 2.Rehabilitation tools and medical care ----- The other day, I came across the article talking about Nintendo Will as a rehabilitation tool. Thanks to the new technology, patients now have better rehabilitation experience than ever before. According to the article, they really enjoy a rehabilitation process playing TV games with a lot of physical motion. This article made me think that I could change the conventional image of rehabilitation tools and make something much more fun.

Identify initial ideas or existing products for addressing this problem by product design. 1.There are so many medical errors that could have been prevented by medical equipments properly designed or better communication between doctors and patients. one of the most careless and common medical errors is that patients take wrong or an over amount of medicines at home due to the unclearness of dose descriptions or explanations from doctors. Especially children, elderly people, non-English speakers tend to have this kind of problem. In the worst case patients die f...

Critique essay by Shinwoo her, Anthony Cesari and Oz Etzioni

Introduction: “Funcy” is a thesis project by Ilanit Ovadya, parsons’ product design graduate of 2007. The problem this project deals with is furniture packaging waste in urban environments. The designer wanted to find a solution to this specific waste problem by designing a flat-packed work-station and eliminating its packaging aspect by its form and usage. The elements been used for packaging become the product’s accessories after assembly, leaving no waste behinds. The target users are young people with limited living spaces.

Non profit organization involved: •Cenyc – Council on the environment of New York City •O2nyc- environmental sustainability through design •Rainforest Relief – protection over world’s tropical rain forests

    Identifying projects’ strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths- •Easy mounting / dismounting process •A variety of optional accessories hanging/tying/adding methods. •No use of extra material (without screws, bolts, etc.)

Weaknesses- •Furniture packaging (usually 2-layer corrugated cardboard) is recyclable, is it really a big waste problem in urban environments?

•The product acts as its own packaging – no damage protection over the product different parts (during transportation, moving, etc.)

•Product form is dictated (no options to fit personal/space needs) •The product is a “temporary use” product, after its short life time it becomes waste by itself....

    A. Inflicting physical and emotional pain on others- and what happens when we go too far..?

    B. I think a lot about human relations and interactions, and how we affect each other, and how we are different from each other. I think about how various characteristics of humans such as self-obsession, fear, and ignorance can lead to us inflicting pain on one another, whether physically or emotionally. And this leads me to think about war, the extreme of this type of human behavior. I think of loss, suffering, separation, exploitation…

C./D. An existing product that deals with the practical issues of war is food aid packages. This solution addresses the immediate need of a community after a devastating event. The food aid packages are dropped by airplanes in areas that are hunger-ridden. However, this intersection is politically and economically controlled, and is often not successful in reaching the severely needy. It is also a donor-driven system, which may not have development as its primary goal. I want to work towards something more conceptual… A tool for making people aware of the horror of our actions.

    E. Essentially, the issue of war affects everyone. It may first directly affect minorities or the under-privileged or innocent people caught in the middle of a political rift, but eventually everyone is affected- politically, economically… With my thesis idea, I hope to make people aware of how their actions may severely affect others.

    F. I looked at organizatio...
