Based on open source philosophy, the launch marked the formation of an all-new kind of resource for the sewing community. Offering copyright-free, downloadable BurdaStyle patterns along with step-by-step instructions, tips and fixes, BurdaStyle has become an invaluable resource for the sewing community, encouraging people of all skill levels to join and allowing members to sell what they’ve created. BurdaStyle combines new technology with time-honored lessons to bring old- fashion craft to a broader audience. With its open-source philosophy, users are encouraged to share their patterns, comments, and expertise with one another. This creates an interactive destination: not just a website for information but a website with a strong and active community.
Programs
There are many ways to be a part of BurdaStyle. Discuss sewing tricks and fixes with members of the BurdaStyle community. Add your sewing term definitions to the ones in our Sewpedia, or check out tips in our user-generated photo and video How Tos. Explore other users' creations in the Gallery, and upload photos of your own. You can even barter or sell what you make through BurdaStyle: Burda is the first established pattern publisher to release its designs without copyrights, allowing members of the public to market their BurdaStyle creations in limited editions.
History
BurdaStyle is inspired by Burda Mode which was founded by Aenne Burda in 1949, Burda Mode is now published in 90 countries and 16 languages, and Burda patterns are recognized everywhere for their quality and consistency and, especially, for the incomparable accuracy of their fit. This exact-fit standard has been developed and perfected by Burda Mode over many years, and is the company's legacy. We at BurdaStyle are proud to carry that legacy forward.
Launched as Beta at DLD 07 on January 21st, 2007, BurdaStyle is a project of the R&D Marketing & Communications department of the German publishing house Hubert Burda Media. BurdaStyle was initiated by Steffi Czerny, the department's managing director an is greatly supported by its senior advisor Franziska Deecke, Head of Corporate Communities.
