    In this image I have attempted to represent the faceless people being sold within the world wide market of the the sex trade and child labor. According to the NGO, Protection Project, located in Washington D.C. about 2 million women and children are sold into the sex trade every year. Based on this statistic, the number five thousand represents the averaged number of people sold daily in one year based on this statistic. This is a violation of Article Four from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is in need of serious attention. My goal with this image is to communicate that these people being sold have no faces and thus no voices. They need others with more power and perspective to assist in the battle against inappropriate servitude. I used a cartoon aesthetic because I believe that cartoons are easily comprehended by many on an almost universal level. I should probably include some items or objects around the feet that may allude or communicate that these are meant to be children and young adults, as they appear now to be a bit older than I had hoped to depict.

  • Does this design reflect a(n)...

    • well developed and easily understood concept?

    I am not convinced that your solution communicates the issue at hand effectively. I question your choice of using a cartoon style in this instance because cartoons are a very sophisticated mode of communicating complicated issues and research in the developing and underdeveloped world has shown that it is not an appropriate means of communicating to audiences with varying literacy levels. In addition, cartoon styles differ from culture to culture. I also believe that the visual manifestation of stereotypes that you have chosen does not reflect the ethnicities – and ages – of the major source countries that supply the human trafficking trade. I also do not believe that you have effectively illustrated the most vulnerable age groups that are victims of human trafficking – to me, the majority of the figures in your illustration seem to be mature adults.

    I feel that the conceptual intent is there but that you have not yet grappled with the realities of the issue which all lie in the details and crafting. Your semiotic coding is not ‘cleaver’ enough to engage viewers on a higher level.
