    Environment, Industrial Design

I've been working hard in the last few months to get Humblefacture.com off the ground. Humblefacture is an advocate for and a manifesto of the evolution toward a new way of making things. Its aims are to lower per person energy use, increase economic stability, enhance social equality, encourage environmental resilience, and amplify the spirit of human innovation and problem solving.

Humblefacture does this in a few ways:

    1) Create complexity in objects through subtle design methods, not high-energy manufacturing methods.

    2) Recognize and preserve the information already contained in raw materials and semi-processed materials

    3) Develop and refine appropriate, human scale methods for manufacturing complex things.

    4) Take inspiration from nature, but recognize that a purely natural system is not what we are designing for; Humblefacture is not neoludditism.

    5) Above all things, embrace humility (in the fact that our designs influence, and are influenced by the world around us) and elegance (in the act of introducing information into matter in order to produce a function) in every design. These seemingly moral or artistic judgments say more about what is wrong with current product development than perhaps any other two words.

Watch the movement build (and add your two cents!!) at Humblefacture.com.

  • Thanks for posting this Dominic. I like the site and I will be very interested to see where it goes.

  • Hi Dominic, My name is Leah Waldman, and I am a senior in the product design department at Parsons the New School for Design in New York. I am currently working on my thesis, which is to revitalize the bone craft of India in order to provide fair wages to the artisans as well as allow for a product that is 100% environmentally sustainable. At the moment I am thinking about possibly developing architectural panels. I am writing to you for two reasons- 1. to get feedback and discuss my ideas/project, and 2. part of the thesis requirement is to work with a non-profit organization that will help us either with research in regards to obtaining information about the problem that we are trying to solve, or helping us market our product- I was wondering if you knew of any non-profit organizations in the New York area that do such work. Also, I thought that your blog, humblefacture.com, was very interesting and corresponded to my thesis mission, which is why I thought it would be beneficial to speak with you. I can provide more information about my project if you would be interested in discussing your ideas and mine...

I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • Leah-

Great to hear from you. I imagine that there are a number of such organizations in NYC. Off the top of my head, you might try Global Goods partners:

    http://www.globalgoodspartners.org/template/contact.cfm

They are sort of "fair trade middlemen", at least in principle, though I don't know very much about their specific practices (and/or how fair their trade is really). You might have luck just searching "Fair trade nonprofit new york" in google.

I'd love to discuss your project in more detail. Why don't you send me an email at my office -- dmuren(at)u.washington.edu -- and we can set up a phone call or iChat.

    Cheers, -Dominic
