    Since a previous D21 post, I have been helping Simon Berry (CEO, ruralnet|uk) promote his latest idea, and what an idea it is! is a campaign aiming to leverage Coca Cola’s distribution muscle to distribute life saving medicines to children in developing countries.

    The idea is simple, but until now has been difficult to evolve. The power of web 2.0 and social networking media however, has allowed Simon to digitally document his progress and to build a digital support network to develop the campaign.

    “We can distribute Coca Cola all around the World but we can’t seem to get medication to save a child from something as simple as diarrhea and I think that that is wrong.” (Annie Lennox, 2008)

    Since the launch of the campaign and due to the power of a Facebook group, Simon was invited by Salvatore Gabola, Coca-Cola’s Global Head of Stakeholder Relations, to a meeting to discuss the idea further at Coca-Cola’s European HQ in Brussels. The campaign’s Facebook group has reached over 4,441 members since its inception on 18 May 2008. It was nominated for the NewStatesman’s New Media Award in June and showcased at London’s 2gether08 festival on 3 July.

    Most recently, the campaign was featured on BBC Radio 4’s iPM programme in May and July, and on the BBC World Service on 13 July.   • Maciej Dakowicz

    Last week, in a focused search through Flickr for humanitarian related photography, I discovered the unique works of Polish born Maciej Dakowicz.

    For the third issue of the inspiring NEED Magazine, Dakowicz has visually captured a story about HOPE organization helping children in Kolkata, India.

    Dakowicz currently lives in Cardiff, completing a PhD in computing and freelancing as a photographer. Do take a moment to explore his work at

    In partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation, IDEO were commissioned to undertake research into new avenues for social change, and design's role in the social sector. The result - a resourceful How-To-Guide and Workbook aptly entitled, Design For Social Impact.

    "The consistent message has been YES. Yes, design thinking has a lot to offer, and many of our potential partners are very excited to see us become more engaged. The challenge is how. How can design firms make social impact work a core part of their business? How can we collaborate with organizations that are highly resource constrained? How can we redesign our offerings to become more accessible to social sector organizations?     Last month 18 of the world’s leading photographers were shortlisted for the Prix Pictet, the first photography award dedicated to sustainability. Can a photograph really help to sustain the planet? According to The Prix Pictet, “It depends on the photograph.”

    The contest mobilizes the medium of photography to bring the message of sustainability to the public. At its 2008 launch in London, Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland (Special Envoy on Climate Change to the Secretary-General of the United Nations), explained that “The Prix Pictet offers photographers the opportunity to influence change for the good of sustainability.”

    Each year the Prix Pictet will focus on a specific sustainability theme and award 100,000 Swiss francs to the photographer who best represents its critical story. The theme for 2008 is water, the world’s most precious resource.

    “There has been much talk about climate change. But not much about where we will see its first impact: water. Flooding. Drought. Contamination. Water is the vector of climate change. By 2010 an estimated 40 per cent of the world’s poorest people will lack access to clean water. Two hundred million may be physically or economically displaced. This is not the future. This is now.”

  • Green Patriotism Campaign by Michael Bierut

    Early last month, more than sixty buses hit the streets of Cleveland encouraging “Green Patriotism” with banners and posters designed by Pentagram (and Cleveland-born) designer Michael Bierut.

    Promoting the ecologically sound use of mass transit and buses, and the development of green jobs in the manufacturing sector, the posters are visible on buses across the city throughout July. “The banners are part of a new environmentalism — one that sees action to address climate change as an imperative to protect both the American and world economies.”

    The Green Patriot Posters project is organised in conjunction with The Canary Project: Landscapes of Climate Change, an exhibition on display through 10 August at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The campaign is commissioning poster designs from leading firms and designers:

    'During World War II the United States was able to mobilize industry and motivate its citizens in breathtaking speed. Factories were overhauled and consumption habits transformed. Conservation (in the form of rationing) became a patriotic act. Strong, graphically compelling posters played a crucial role in the success of this campaign. Taking action was presented in these posters as vital for the common good of the nation and those who were willing to sacrifice were portrayed as attractive, dynamic American heroes.'

    Its about time we stop killing our pets in the shelters, we are not over populated these pets have homes, we place approx 30 pets a month into loving forever homes , if we can get these shelters, a bit more organized and motivated we can save the lives of all these highly adoptable pets.

    These shelters are not even killing these animals right they are missing the most important step for a pain free death maybe its that the sedation medication is too expensive or there too lazy to do this little step to insure that the pets feel no pain of the poisons passing through there veins. What this poison does is throw them in to a massive heart attack and yes that is painful.

    There are many shelters as well that still use the gas chamber. These animals thrash around and bang there heads into the sides of the container that is over packed with animals, they bite each other ECT just struggling to breath. The puppies and young dogs are strong and healthy and some don’t die right away since there organs wont shut down. So then they are struck on the head by a shovel or choked by someone’s foot until death occurs This is not right we do understand that we live in a throw away society, but killing our companions wow what have we become? Why we are too lazy to find these pets homes. This needs to be stopped; I know there are homes out there for each and everyone of these pets.     باستان شناسان و مورخین بشر پیشین را از روی آثار بدست آمده از وی مورد شناسایی قرار میدهند و به فرهنگ و آداب و سنن ایشان از روی دست ساخته ها و هنرشان پی میبرند.

    علی رغم کم توجهی که گاها به صتایع دستی میشود باید خاطر نشان ساخت که این گونه محصولات واجد ارزشهای بالایی در قیاس با محصولات صنعتی میباشند، اگر چه در مقیاس گردش سرمایه و بازار سهم کمتری را به خود اختصاص میدهند.

    در محصولاتی که به روش انبوه تولید میشوند نیز باید ارزشهایی نوین و قابل توجه را پدید آورد که بتوانند مبین فرهنگ و تفکر مردم زمانه خود باشند. چرا که آیندگان نسبت به ما که در زمان حال زیست میکنیم از طریق محصولات مورد استفاده مان قضاوت خواهند کرد . مثلا محصولات مکینتاش و اپل را در نظر بگیرید یا هر محصول معروف دیگر !

    این محصولات برای باستان شناسان ، فرهنگ شناسان و مردم شناسان یا جامعه شناسان آینده بیشتر از آثار هنری روی دیوارها ارزش خواهند داشت و در جهت درک تفکر بشری خواهد بود....

    امروزه ما در دریایی از محصولات صنعتی شناوریم که به نوعی شکل دهنده آگاهی ما نسبت به پیرامونمان میباشند. تاثیرات این محصولات بیش از هر رسانه دیگری از جمله انواع مطبوعات و یا رادیو و تلویزیون و سینما موجب قالب خوردن ذهن ما میگردند.

    تصور کنید وارد سینمایی میشوید تا به تماشای فیلم مورد علاقه خود بنشینید. ابتدا به گیشه فروش بلیط رفته و با متصدی آن روبرو میشوید که عینک به چشم زده است و احتمالا از یک سری زینت آلات دیگر استفاده نموده است. یا ممکن است بلیط خود را از یک دستگاه خودکار فروش بلیط که با سکه یا کارت اعتباری کار میکند. نوشابه را فراموش نکنید ، آن را که بسته بندی منحصر به فردی دارد از یک ماشین فروش خودکار تهیه میکنید. وارد سالن سینما شده و روی صندلی می نشینید و بالاخره فیلم شروع میشود. صحنه های فیلم پر شده است از تصاویر محصولات گوناگون که همه و همه حاصل از تلاش و استعداد طراحان صنعتی است.

    ما به صورت انفعالی نمیتوانیم با این محصولات برخورد کنیم و به صورتی ...
