Nike Makes Shoes From Trash, Nokia Envisions Remade Cell Phones By: GreenBiz.com

BEAVERTON, Ore., Feb. 15, 2008 -- Nike and Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash have teamed up to turn garbage into shoes.

The new Nike Trash Talk basketball shoe is made primarily out manufacturing waste, materials that normally would be thrown away.

The shoe incorporates waste leather and synthetic leather, scrap foam, environmentally preferred rubber and a fully recycled shoebox. The outer sole of the shoe will also include Nike Grind material, which is made of recycled materials from used shoes and shoe manufacturing.

The Trash Talk meets Nike's Considered sustainable design standards for reduced waste and use of environmentally-preferred materials. Nike plans for all its footwear to meet sustainability standards by 2011, followed by apparel in 2015 and equipment in 2020.

The company also plans to cut footwear waste by 17 percent and reduce packaging and point-of-purchase waste by 30 percent by 2011.

Nash was expected to wear the Trash Talk during Phoenix's game yesterday against the Dallas Mavericks and also plans to wear the recycled shoe during the All-Star Game. "Any opportunity to promote the environment and preserve our planet is a step in the right direction," Nash said in a statement.

The Trash Talk will be available in limited quantities in Phoenix's home and away colors and All-Star Game colors.

Nokia, meanwhile, has revealed its concept Remade phone, an attempt to make a phone with only recycled materials. The prototype phone includes metal from aluminum cans, plastic from drink bottles and rubber from car tires.
