Recently considering the ways in which Communications Designers can become more actively involved with social issues and initiatives, I came across CHANGE.ORG in my exploration.
Founded by Ben Rattray, Change.org is a social network for social activism, incorporating nonprofits, politicians, and people across the globe Change.org aims to transform social activism by serving as the central platform that connects likeminded people, whatever their interests, and enables them to exchange information, share ideas, and collectively act to address the issues they care about.
Ignoring the fact the site could benefit from some contemporary web and communication design skills, this could prove a great platform for meeting new potential clients. Join the "changes" you are passionate for, find out who runs them and get in touch.
There is also a Change.org application on Facebook, so whilst Facebook is becoming more and more of a professional networking tool for me, I suggest this application to designers, in another small step to bring the barriers down between designers and the rest of society who need us.
