I tried to use strong iconic symbols that I felt would be universally recognized: the black and white clapboard, barbed wire, the peace sign. The clapboard is iconic to film production; barbed wire is recognized as a tool of oppression; the peace sign represents hope. In my first draft I used black barbed wire to represent the forces of oppression, thinking of despots, dictators, politicians and militarists, but it struck me that the film festival is not directed at them, it is directed at the rest of us. I felt that white barbed wire might better imply that oppression is allowed to exist because of our ignorance, apathy and inaction.
