Stories from the Field: Logo

by Jana Stone

The design brief for this assignment lays out a provocative challenge: Create an identity that establishes "Stories from the Field" as a festival that supports the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and that showcases the work of filmmakers documenting world-wide humanitarian relief and social justice issues. Potential applications for the logo require that the finished design be easily reproduced in all sizes and media, and that it be universally “readable” as well as culturally neutral. The solution was to use three simple, quintessential visual devises: a filmmaker’s scene-marker slate, the globe’s longitude and latitude marks (while avoiding geographically specific continental land masses), and a stenciled font reminiscent of labels tagging humanitarian relief materials. Per the requirements of the brief, two design options are provided and are shown in two-color (PMS 300 + PMS 368) and grayscale versions.
