by Paul Manders
Co-authors:

KUBIT is a temporary shelter for homeless people in disaster situations. It aims to provide a ‘decent’ home (a shelter with certain degree of comfort) for the occupants throughout a rebuilding period of 3 to 5 years

Answering an increasing need > Organizations such as UNHCR and the Red Cross wish to provide ccommodation for people who have lost their homes as a result of environmental disasters and manmade actions:
- floods & storms
- droughts and fires
- earthquakes & volcanoes
- civil conflict
- extreme poverty

Providing a better answer > ‘The ultimate objective is to restore people’s former living condition as soon as possible’. (Red Cross, 2001)

‘Temporary’ shelters should provide a level of comfort and safety comparable with normal housing conditions but construction methods and materials must be fit for the specific situations.
