Budding Block

by Wenny Hsu

Budding Block is designed to express unlimited growth similar to that of a budding plant. Budding Block is a set of shape blocks that allows a child to discover the magic and infinite possibility of composing with multiple elements. This toy is intended for children from 2 years of age and above. The blocks can be a tool for a child’s cognition development and alphabets learning during preschooler stages. With a parent or older sibling’s help, if necessary, he/she could also reuse the container for plant potting.

Each block unit has a curved-in shape derived from elements of an English alphabet. Each unit is measured 3 inches by 3 inches by 3/4 inches thick. The block units are made of 100% recyclable and 100 % bio-degradable paper pulp with non-toxic paint on the areas with the curved-in shapes.

The container of Budding Block is made of Polypropylene (PP). Polypropylene is commonly used for packaging and is a recyclable ¬plastic material. The container is measured 11 inches by 11 inches and 12 inches high. The container cover is also a letter frame for composing an English alphabet. With the cover right-side-up and put underneath the box as water collector, a child can pot a plant in it. There are also drainage holes on the bottom of the box to enhance the growth of the plant.

Shape playing is one elemental method of training a child during his/her early cognitive development. Budding Block contains several sets of units that are similar in shape yet different in size and angle. By arranging and playing with these units, a child could learn to understand how to differentiate or recognize the similarity and/or differences between each unit. Further more, upon discovering the shapes, a child could use the units to compose any pattern/image imaginable.
