SHELLter is a reactive proposal which reflects the aftermath of a natural
disaster. The aim is to create an enclosure which addresses three main
problems;-

1 – STAY - Housing for those left without adequate accommodation
2 – STOW - The enclosure should be lightweight, transportable and reusable
3 – SHAPE - A skilled workforce cannot be guaranteed therefore the proposal should be easily erected by aid workers.

STAY - People left without homes should not be deprived of dignity or privacy. This proposal allows relief as well as comfort and a level of security not often afforded to those victims of natural disasters. The shelter is designed to house 4 to 6 people but is modular, therefore may be adapted to accommodate a larger number. A small area of outside space is incorporated where it may be possible to site a small generator for power. Sanitary accommodation will be incorporated as a pod which is inserted within the ribs of the structure.

STOW - A membrane is bonded to hollow blocks which can be folded away to store and transport prior to erection or when the temporary shelter is no longer required. The hollow blocks are proposed to be made of a recycled plastic material; both lightweight and durable.

SHAPE - The membrane and blocks fold up and around a frame and, depending on the location, can be filled with either material and debris from the disaster site for weight at the base and for insulation around
the perimeter walls, or filled with sand and insulative material transported to the site if necessary.

Ribs of strong reinforced components within a recycled plastic encasure are threaded down spindle, connecting elements to erect the skeletal structure. The shell of membrane and plastic blocks are wrapped around the skeletal structure to weatherproof the structure as far as is practically possible. The membrane is lapped over the top of the spindle in each section to achieve a weather seal. The structure is intended to be able to be erected easily by unskilled people, aid workers and local residents.
