Unesco’s Award for Excellence in Handicrafts represents the balance between tradition, innovation and sustainability. A helping hand is a long life tradition, starting early, during childhood where a child helps his brother weave cane into baskets. A brother helps his father build a hut to put a roof over their heads, a father cuts down trees to build furniture for their house, a grandmother makes ornaments for the market out of left over wood. This is the tradition Unesco is fighting to sustain, the tradition of handicraft. A craftsperson’s hands is their greatest tool.
