The message behind my poster for the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures is one of unity, understanding and acceptance. The French word Rapprochement is defined as an establishment or re-establishment of harmonious relations; to bring near or bring together. This, I believe has always been the goal of the United Nations, to bring nations and cultures together for better communication, understanding , and acceptance, not to mention learn from one another. This year’s theme or focus is right in line with the United Nations goal but with the emphasis on bringing together.
The inspiration for my poster design is an image of four interlinking hands, joined at the wrist to signify unity. I colored the arms in four varying shades of flesh tones to represent all people of all races and cultures. This is a bringing together literally of different groups .The arms themselves are the same signifying that we are all the same as humans, just different in skin color. I used the image of the globe as a background for the interlinking arms to enforce the message that this is an international theme and encompasses the entire world.
