The idea of a set of building blocks repeating, to form the structure of the written word which is communicated with the acronym IFCD. While it is true that most languages share common characters, the combination makes them unique.
I modernize the symbol by using a font, I designed which has a technical feel. The colors represent different skin tones and also juxtapose against the more technical feel of the building blocks.
This treatment has a lot of inherent flexibility in how it is used, the letters could be placed in a container shape or could also knock out of an image.
