Languages Matter

by Luwa Cai

Language Matters because it is how we come to understand and express our life experiences. Everything we do involves the use of some form of language, whether it is spoken language, body language, or sign language. These sensory symbols allow us to communicate to others and understand them in turn.

Language thus, is the common denominator that ties us and draw us together, like a thread that is sews together our experiences, our emotions, our learning, and our hopes and beliefs. Moreover, because of the social and evolutionary nature of language, they reflect the indigenous community, and are richly embedded with elements of their culture and history. There is a favorite quote from Toni Morrison that inspired these submissions:

"We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives."

All languages celebrate, embrace, research, invent, and challenge life and each other. These concepts are what I wanted to portray visually in my submissions.
